I am having issues with my wirless card and am hoping some of the gurus here can help me out

To start with I am using an Intel Wireless 4965 AG or AGN network card on Suse 10.3

It is a new laptop and the wireless card itself works fine under vista, so i know my issue is not the card but more my configuration
( or lack of mabey )

K well let me get started with what i know and have tried
  • Module being used for wireless card is iwl4965
  • The same thing happened with my last laptop with ipw2200 on 10.2 and allowing ifup to run my network is what fixed it however that didn't work here
  • Wireless light on laptop not comming on
  • Set to Static IP address
  • Yast Network Card area sees the device as Intel Lenovo Thinkpad T61 ( but it's actually an r61 ) but when i go into network manager i see it as the correct card name
  • Have Tried Activating the device at boot , on Connection and on Hotplug with a restart and manual intervention between each and had no luck getting the light to come on or connecting
  • Can see wireless card inside of Yasts Network Card area and can also View available Networks either Network Manager or ifup are controlling
  • I am using WPA security ( router is set to accept wpa or wpa2 in hexdecimal)
  • I still get the same issues when no security is on the network
  • When I do " ifup wlan0 -o debug" I get expected information like the ipaddress and submetmask , but also a warning that WPA may not be suported by the device ( i know it is in windows dunno about with linux )
  • When I do an ifconfig I have been assigned an ip address
  • When i plug in the ethernet everything works flawlessly so i know the gateway and dns are setup correctly ( though i find it weird the new network card manager doesn't seperate these options for the ethernet and wlan cards)

    the curve ball --->
  • Can see all the wireless networks in range

I have tried all kinds of combinations to try and fix this isssue but have gone as far as my knowledge can take me i think. The fact i can see the networks through Network Manger makes me think the issue is security related which i ruled out by disablign that on the network or it has to do with it trying 802.11 n Draft as the default connection mode and my configuration has an issue with this ( never used draft n before).

Anyone know what else i should be looking at and for ? Also shouldn't the light on my laptop come on any time the wireless card is active .. whether i am connected to a network or not ? I have done everythign I did when i had this issue with the ipw2200 and more so if anyone can help i would really appreciate it

thankyou very much in advance If you need anymore info from me just let me know and i will do my best to provide as detailed as i can

try changing to the old intel driver, it appears the iwl driver shows these symptoms & you need to change to the old driver to get it working

Which old intel driver sorry ?

iwlwifi ? or the ipw3965 version , or do you just mean load up the previous release of the driver i am using ? I have been reading bad things about the driver peopel where usign before , things like dropouts and or weakened connection over a span of time for some reason. Anyways will give it a shot cause even rebooting to get my network back at this poitn is better than what i got hehe. At this point i don't even care about connectign with draft N just want to get it online but it would ofcourse be great

ATM i am testing out loading kernel 2.6.22.12 supposedly all versions of the kernel after that are totally supporting all features of these wifi cards so will have a look c and report back

Thanx for your help deltaflyer

I thought I would leave a bit of documentation for anyone else experiencing this in the future ,

I started off by "cheating " and using ndiswrapper and the w29n51.inf file inside of the Intel windows xp drivers zip , which got me online very quickly and with no hassles, using wpa2 .

Not being a Huge fan of ndiswrapper normally i continued to try and solve the solution nativly with suse and after a bit of chopping and changing of drivers i found a set that made my card work. The combination i ended up with was iwlwifi-1.1.18, mac80211-10.0.0 and kernel:2.6.22.12

it required the combination of the three to work at it's best , a few other drivers worked but had a few dropout or speed issues.

After running some tests on the network i was shocked at myself but have decided to stick with ndiswrapper for now as it seems to give me the most stable and fastest connection to my access point , though i hope that there isn't too much delay in the iwl drivers as the issue they have in their most recent drivers seems like it won't be a huge thing to overcome and hopefully they have already addressed the speed and reliability issues.

Good luck to anyone that is in the same boat i was

Hello,

I have the same card, and with a few issues as you mentioned, however i am not even close to understanding what you did.

Could you give it a "guide for dummies" on how were you able to accomplish this. I have installed several drivers and actually at one point i thought it was solved and i have been living with it for a while but the wireless is intermittent and basically annoying.

Thank you.
