Thumbs up

This is not about Linux but is there a linux program that can scan my sons PC to find the password as he has forgotten his password.
Or do I have to reformat the PCX
My son is using Vista.

try http://www.openwall.com/john/ John the ripper password cracker. Available for Windows, Linux, Mac.

It basically uses a dictionary (i used it about one year ago and it seems to me you can choose different dictionaries. Be aware that you might have to download like 8 GB of dictionary. I am not sure if it was John the Ripper or another program though) to try a brute force attack.
Now, if your previous password was easily cracked, it will find it (might take days, be aware). If the password was clever and hard to crack, then no hopes. You can try however with a more complete dictionary, choosing among the available ones.

maybe you can just delete his accound and recreate it then? and use linux live cd to read the ntfs drive and backup documents (to flash card or something). I remember back in xp where it was as easy to boot to safe mode and choose "administrator" and you had admin privs without entering as password

in vista this option is not available
But, are there any other accounts, even not admin accounts, of which you remember the pwd?
