Hey I was wondering, are there any anti-theft featuers for Linux? Like I know that there are some software types out there for windows that let you trace where your computer is if stolen, like a GPS or Lo Jack. Also I know that some computers have encrypted hard drives or whatever. I once heard, not sure if it's true, but there are some systems that can wipe or encrypt a hard drive if a theft occurs. How it works, I don't know, may just be a rumor. Anyway, there are probably a ton of possibilities for Anti-Theft on a software side for Windows, I was wondering what was out for Linux

I am thinking of installing that system they used in Live Free or Die Hard. That exploding PC looks like it would take care of any security issues one might have.

If i stole your computer ( not that i would steal), but I would open it and examine the system so your security just failed.

i have read that if you do not encrept your hard disk, its very easy to boot to a live cd and change the passwords and then the entire security is compermised :-( BTW:is there some hope for running lojack via wine in suse boot scripts i got it as part of my laptops package, and its just going to waste.

OKay, so what's the deal with encryption? Like i understand that it encrypt the hard drive and what not, that part I get, what I don't get is, how does it work when you want to boot into the hard drive? are you asked to provide a key at boot or what? I know that when you have like an encrypted wireless signal, or encrypted file with mcrypt, you have to use a key to unencrypt it, well if you boot into an encrypted hard drive, how would the computer boot? Maybe I am just asking a dumb question, oh well. Thanks.

Kewl, so do you type in the keep likeas if it were a password or is it like a gnupg style key where the key is like a file and you have to have it on like a jump drive or something at boot? Just wondering if anyone has tried this. Maybe I just need to either open a new post or try to find an old one, who knows.

I can point you to 2 approaches but not Suse specific there should be similarities though. I got a feeling Suse won't use LUKS though by default would take someone who's done this to confirm...

Now I have looked for more specific tut but couldn't find one there is one at opensuse but it seems a little dated.

I regards to lojack seeing stuff that if bios enabled that it will ring out before the OS, /. article someone mentioned using it for linux based. Seen other poormans version of using dyndns and updating the dns register with a cron job.

Though TBH if lojack is bios and onboard enabled this seems the only way that's nearly foolproof but I suspect there maybe a way.

You only have to make sure its not network enabled then it can't ring home, then you have all the time in the world to work around it.

Edit

I am thinking of creating a poll to see percentage of those with encrypted root partition/files system. Yes?
