My family don't suffer much from viruses or malware because I maintain some excellent free software on their windows computers. For myself I'd like to install a scanner into my Suse to check incoming emails, network shares and files that I download from the internet.
When I search in Yast --> software management, I get the options in the pic: [attachmentid=1617] I seem to have a choice between antivir and clamav. I think I'll go with the open source clamav rather than the proprietary "free for home use" antivir. So I'll install clamav, clamav-db and the clamav GUI clam-tk. Plus samba-vscan for network shares. I don't want my resources used up by constant auto-scanning of Linux (Suse) files because Linux is probably free from viruses for the time being (until it becomes popular I suppose). So I won't install dazuko. I wonder if that makes sense. On a separate issue it seems that the KDE app, Klamav, might be an alternative to clam-tk? So that's my thinking. Here are my questions:

I use clamav. You install the package and you mail-client (at least kmail) is automatically configured to use it. In the runlevel-editor you must then activate the services clamd and freshclam, so that clamav is running and updated.

Dazuko is a kernel module which allows on-access virus scanning. Klamav does not work automatically with thunderbird Not sure about Samba /Geoff |

Thanks for those two replies.
I'm installing the packages you've suggested and am wading through the procedures/setups now. {Installed clamav klamav and their associates, but not dasuko because I don't want Suse scanning files willy-nilly.} It's a pity about Thunderbird. I think that makes it of limited use to me and a large number of Linux users; but I hope to find out some way of scanning T-bird emails. Swerdna |
