I've recently installed OpenSuse 10.2, and after a reboot I can't log in (neither as user or root). Rebooting again to runlevel 3, I get the error message "User not known to the underlying authentication modul" when I try to log in. If I just type the wrong password or try as a nonexisting user I get the message "Login incorrect".

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

What to do about it?

in general this is a problem with pam module, but the reason may be kerberos. Have you tried to modify user authentication during OS installation?

sorry,

or you have not successfully created user and root.

I did start a kerberos client just before the problem started. How can I check if that is the problem and then resolve it?

PS User and root worked fine before.

you would have to kill kerberos, and next after you successfully login, properly configure kerberos.

I've made some progress, by trying to copy some settings from a machine running Suse10.1. With Kerberos activated I can log in as my user using the Kerberos password and as root with the ordinary password. But if I create new users, they need a kerberos ticket as well which is not optimal for me. On the other machine (with 10.1) all users can log in using their ordinary password without the need for kerberos.

Can I copy the configuration files from the machine running 10.1 directly or has something changed in 10.2?

The files I figured controls the behaviour is
/etc/pam.d/*
/etc/security/{pam_env.conf,pam_unix2.conf}
/etc/krb5.conf
Have I missed anything?

I would assume that syntax is not that much different so this may work. But I would backup original config files first.

Did you resolved it? Can you tell me how?
