Hi Friends,

I am a newbie to Linux.

I recently installed OpenSuse 10.2 in my computer. But I couldn't configure Internet Connection for Linux.
Windows XP is also installed in the same computer. And Windows side has internet connection. It is working fine.

Can anyone tell me how to configure Internet Connection on Linux side?
If anyone can even provide URLs for similar problems I would appreciate it. I am sure I am not the only person facing similar problems.

Here are the configuration information on Windows side.

Use following IP Addresses

IP Address 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask 255. 255. 255. 0

Default Gateway 192. 168. 1. 1

Use following DNS Server Addresses

Preferred DNS Server 192. 168. 1. 1

Alternate DNS Server 61. 1. 96. 69

hi there, and welcome to the forums.

right, a few quick questions, the internet connection you are using, is it wireless, or is it by cable? if it's by cable is it ethernet or usb? if it's wireless what encryption are you useing (e.g. wep, wpa etc etc). have you checked yast>network settings>network devices to see if your network card is listed there? have you tried configuring it?

sorry of the so many questions. if you could answer the main one, whether its wireless or cable, then i will be able to help next (or at least try )

Ross.

1) are you unable to:
configure network
or
connect to the internet

post output of
lspci | grep -i net

a nice short reply then
is it ethernet cable? if so go to yast and try and configure the connection, you should see a network card for cable connection there in the overview tab. click on configure, make it user controlled with knetwork manager and set it to dhcp if you are not using a static ip address. then open up knetworkmanager and once plugged in it should automatically connect after a few seconds. you can set it to load at boot, then restart your computer with the cable plugged in, i find this the best method to get up and running to start with. check in the hardware tab in network devices>network card that there is something filled in the module name section as well. if you are still not connecting i we can go through some more detailed settings.

edit: if knetworkmanager doesn't work try kinternet, sometimes one or the other doesn't work for some reason (or at least i have found that :huh: )

it would be really more informative if you answer my questions and post output of
(from terminal window)
lspci | grep -i net

otherwise guessing what do you have or not will take forever.

also post output of
cat /etc/hosts
cat /etc/resolv.conf
ifconfig -a

Is your firewall on? Try to turn it off, and then check, if there are any changes.

The lspci | grep -i net output is ( I logged in as root, because otherwise there was error for this command).

00:12.0 Ethernet controller VIA Technologies Inc. VT6102 (Rhine II ) (rev 74)

I will post the output of other things you asked later because I wouldn't have access for Linux (my computer) for another half day. It would have been better if you asked this etc/hosts query earlier. If there is anything else I need to check please tell me.

Dear Friends,

What I want to know is how to fill those IP Addresses and Netmasks and DNS Settings.

I will explain the step by step procedure. Please tell me where I go wrong.

(1) Yast------Network Devices-----------Network Card-------------

(2) There are two choices now, (1) USER MANAGED WITH NETWORK MANAGER (2) TRADITIONAL

METHOD WITH IFUP -----I chose the second one, Traditional method

(3) I clicked the ADD Button now.... Selected Static Address setup.

(4) Now I have to fill IP Address, Subnet Mask and Name Servers etc. Here I want to know what to fill.

These are the values at the Windows side.

IP Address -----> 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask ------> 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway ------> 192.168.1.1

Preferred DNS Server -------> 192.168.1.1.

Alternate DNS Server -------> 61.1.96.69

Please Remember the Linux version is Opensuse 10.2

The Internet was actually configured for the same Opensuse 10.2 earlier. I actually configured it. But I did it and got it right accidentally.

Some days ago I had to re install Opensuse 10.2 again. So earlier configuration was lost.
