Having typed that, I have always found samba a pain to setup (mind you its been over 4 years since I last tried). Since then, I've been using smb and ssh for file sharing. So until you get your samba setup sorted, as an interim solution, you could use smb and ssh. As a kde user, to get from the Linux PC, to the Windows PC, open up Konqueror (the file manager) and type: [b]smb://oldcpu@192.168.2.120). Of course, you need to have the windows PC file sharing enabled, and the windows pc firewall opened such that the Linux PC is allowed access. To access the Linux PC, from the Windows PC, I use the free application Winscp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinSCP and I have the Linux PC firewall (port 22) opened to allow ssh transfer. I also blocked root access on the Linux PC over ssh as a security measure. For network printing, I have a printer connected to a Linux PC, and I use the IPP print standard for printing from Windows to the Linux PC's printer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Printing_Protocol I have a Linux Concepts page I am working on here, which may be of some help in providing some general concepts: http://en.opensuse.org/Concepts Its a very condensed page, but it has links to provide more details. |

Samba's long introduction is really scary. But that could be the way to get on Linux.
Thank you all for help! |
