Typically, I like to refer new openSUSE users to the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide:
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting

Please try working your way through that, step by step. Please post here if you have any problems.

If after working your way through the entire guide, and if your audio still doesn't work, please connect your PC to the internet, and post here:

Congratulations, you have sound!

There are likely an assortment of reasons, .... the biggest being you are likely still new to this, and are going through the learning curve we all went through at one time.

Be absolutely certain you have your mixer setup properly (with both master volume and PCM volume) up to an appropriate level (say 65% or so) when testing your sound.

When testing for sound, its best to start with a simple test (such as try to play a .wav file from your hard drive) and then go from there. Trying to play CDs, or DVDs, or .mp3's, or .avi's, ....etc .... are more challenging, and may not initially work for an assortment of reasons. But don't be discouraged, as openSUSE can have first rate multimedia, once setup.

The first thing to typically do is sort your Software Package management, adding the appropriate repositories, so that you can easily install selected 3rd party software, in addition to Novell/SuSE-GmbH packaged software. So please NOW follow the advice in this URL and enable your repositories:
http://opensuse-community.org/Repositories/10.3
ie... Go to YaST -> Software -> Community Repositories, and add:
* OSS
* Non-OSS
* Packman
* Main Update Repository
Note, that OSS, Non-OSS, and Main Update Repository are Novell/SuSE-GmbH packages, while Packman is a 3rd party repository with lots of essential multimedia applications. So add all of those.

Note its essential your PC is actively connected to the Internet during this.

Now, from YaST you can install various players, audio and video codecs, I recommend, you go to YAST > Software > Software Management, and now add:
* libxine1
* xine-ui
* mad
* amarok
* kaffeine
* vlc
* libffmpeg
* ffmpeg
* smplayer
* mplayer
* w32codec-all
* xvid
* libdvdread3
Please install the Packman versions of the above applications. The versions packaged by Novell/SuSE-GmbH tend to be crippled for proprietary reasons. In the case of kaffeine and amarok, I recommend you go into its configuration/preferences menu and select the "xine" sound engine.

You can should install libdvdcss2 by typing the following in a konsole with root permissions:Note that is all one line.

That should get you started. Post here if you have any problems.

Was this success as a regular user, or only with root permissions?

I've had simular issues and i'm also new, only took me 15 minutes to figure out how to adjust "PCM FRONT" because my speakers are built into my monitor. Load all the mixers you can and eventually there is one that controls "Front" once i moved that i could hear sound. Is this the same issue you have?

Please note that if user root has sound, and a regular user does not have sound, its possibly a permissions problem. The audio troubleshooting guide suggests a work around in this case (adding a regular user to group audio):
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshootin...issions_Problem

If that does not work, please provide answers to the detailed request I made in my earlier post (for more information). Its very difficult to provide you an accurate recommendation with the current dearth of information on your PC hardware/configuration in your posts. http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.ph...st&p=272817

Apologies. Syntax error. Try again:
Code:
su -c "rpm -Uvh http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm"

If KDE, your mixer is called kmix. If Gnome, I believe it is alsamixer.

How far did you get through the audio troubleshooting guide?

I really do need the output of the two scripts, in order to provide you with a good recommendation. So to re-iterate, please provide:
d. the output URL provided by the two scripts recommended to run in the audio troubleshooting guide:
