Hi,

after having installed Banshee (besides having Amarok installed) on my Thinkpad T61 running OpenSuSE 10.3 and KDE 3.5 the entire soundsystem is dead.

All the settings in the Control Centre appear to be correct.

Will de-installing Banshee help?

Thanks and regards.

Are you certain this failure is due to banshee (and/or amarok) being installed, or is it due to some other update (such as updating the kernel)?

Have you tried a basic sound test? (such as that suggested in the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide):
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshootin...Test_Your_Sound

Does basic sound work? [Note - if basic sound works, I likely can not help with banshee, as I do not use that software].

Hi an thanks,

Have checked sound with YAST.

YAST > HARDWARE > SOUND > OTHER > TEST does not produce any sound.
Have checked volume, too.

The machine doesn't even beep or so when booting.

Will have a look when home tonight.

Its possible a kernel update caused your sound not to work. This has been known to happen, and its easy to fix. Sometimes, for newer kernels, one also needs a newer alsa version built specifically for the new kernel.

I recommend you try to work your way through the openSUSE audio troubleshooting guide, updating your alsa version if need be. ....
http://en.opensuse.org/AudioTroubleshooting

If after having done all you can do with the audio troubleshooting guide, you find your audio still does not work, please post here the output of:
a. <span style="font-family:Courier New">cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound</span>
d. output URL(s) that are provided by running the two scripts from the audio troubleshooting guide:

Hi,

thanks again. Sound worked perfect under SLED10. After moving to OpenSuSE 10.3 something must have happend.

My T61 has got an Intel 82801H (ICH8) audio chip.

Alsa packages installed
alsa-1.0.14-31.2
alsa-plugins-1.0.14-41
alsa-firmware-1.0.14-24
alsa-oss-1.0.14-23
alsa-utils-1.0.14-27

Kernel
linux 2.6.22.17-0.1-default #1 SMP 2008/02/10 20:01 UTC i686 GNU/Linux

Drivers
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

Will run the two scripts at home because i can't go online with my notebook in the office.

Cheers.

Heinrich

OK, thanks for this. According to what I have read on the Internet, you T61 needs at least version 1.0.15rc2 of the alsa drivers to get sound working properly.
http://www.linlap.com/wiki/IBM-Lenovo+Thinkpad+T61

Hence, per the audio troubleshooting guide, I recommend you connect your laptop to the internet, and then update the sound by sending the following 3 zypper commands from an xterm/konsole with root permissions:

Code:
zypper install alsa alsa-driver-kmp-default alsa-utils alsa-tools alsa-firmware alsa-plugins alsa-oss libasound2
Note - the above are exactly 3 separate lines of code.

Then reboot your PC. If that does not work, please advise, and based on the script output I will propose some edits to your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.

Hi,

thanks I will try that at home.

This obviously means that the Alsa packages on SLED 10 are more recent than the
ones on the OpenSuSE 10.3 installation DVD which I downloaded the other
week.

Thanks for your efforts.

Possibly. Another less likely possibility is OpenSUSE-10.3's alsa-1.0.14 has a bug (in its driver for your T61) which was not in earlier versions, and then fixed in a later alsa release.

Its also possible your SLED 10 had an older version of alsa, that was custom patched by Novell with the fix for the T61. .... There are other possibilities.

But until we know exactly what version of alsa your SLED 10 had, this is mostly speculation.

I recommend you update you alsa on your openSUSE-10.3 as noted before.

Sound in YAST, kmix and alsamixer up all the way

Newly installed alsa packages
alsa-utils-1.0.16.hg20080429-1.1
alsa-plugins-1.0.14-41
alsa-1.0.16.hg20080323-1.2
alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.16.hg20080502_2.6.22.17_0.1-1.1
alsa-oss-1.0.15.hg20071007-2.5
alsa-firmware-1.0.16.hg20080314-1.2
alsa-tools-1.0.16.hg20080122-7.17

cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0

Thanks! Thats a good update, and that is EXACTLY the information we need to get your sound working!!

Quote:
cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
Code:
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0
# u1Nb.iJWhLrosxI5:Lenovo Thinkpad T61
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
[/b]
OK, what we will do next, is modify your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.

According to the "Alsa.configuration.txt" file, that comes with alsa, for your AD1984 codec (on your T61) the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file options are:
Code:
****AD1984
******basic********default configuration
******thinkpad****Lenovo Thinkpad T61/X61
******dell********Dell T3400
So please change your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file to the following:
Code:
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=thinkpad
# u1Nb.iJWhLrosxI5:Lenovo Thinkpad T61
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
Then after saving that change, restart alsa by typing in a konsole with root permissions:
<span style="font-family:Courier New">rcalsasound restart</span>

Then test your sound! It should work now after this. Don't forget to check your mixer after restarting alsa. In addition to checking your laptop speakers, also check your audio out (headphone output jack).

Good luck!
