Hi all,

can anyone recommend to me some easy to use (so, please, a GUI for starters ) software which is good for cutting bits of film out. i record stuff using a dvd recorder, this saves it as a .vro file, which is 1 big file which plays like a .avi file, i believe using avidemux i can convert it to .avi. but the problem is if i start recording 5mins before the program i obviously get the adverts. how can i cut these off? and at the end as well. it would be nice if there was a tool with a slide for the time i could say yeh cut up to 3:20 off the start, and delete all time after 1hour for instance.

any suggestions welcome

Try "dvbcut" --- thats what I use for cutting intro's and commercials
out of movies recorded from tv.

There is a one-click install for it ---- try a webpin search

unfortunately dvbcut doesn't recognise .avi files. but, since the only times i will need to do this are when recording my own stuff, i could convert to .mpg and not .avi. however, in avidemux which option for video do i select to convert to .mpg? see a list from the photo attached

thanks

'fraid I don't know the answer to that; did some reading on the avedmux wiki and it looked like it had some answers.

I really know very little about this subject - just a little about stuff I have used.

You might try to re-phrase the title and start a new thread and see if you can get Oldcpu's attention. I'm sure he has the answer.

Gary

ps: one way to get his attention is to bad-mouth tovid -_-

I would do the following:
Install Tovid
then use Linux console : tovid -pal -dvd -normalize -in movie.avi - out newname
This is easy, efficient and quick.
Then once you have the mpeg file you can edit with dvbcut.

You could use avidemux to chop it up into smaller pieces. I have found avidemux is not as precise as dvbcut, when it comes to chopping up video files. But avidemux will handle many formats, while dvbcut, as you point out, is limited to mpg.

I mainly use tovid to convert from avi to mpg format. .... although there have been a few occasions where I found tovid had problems with the audio track, where as avidemux did not have the same problems. But the avidemux multitude of options can be confusing.
