Ok, some might find this weird but for a while now i have been using something called Holosync which a method of meditation using CD Audio & Headphones, but it requires extreme accuracy in sound reproduction due to tones it uses to be effective.

Now on Windows, my Sound Blaster 24 bit sound drivers come up trumps and of course work beautifully without missing a beat, but what i hate i needing to reboot just use Windows for Holosync and i would rather use Linux.

But i have noticed that there are times when say for example i am watching a video on YouTube or some other site and the audio has distortion at half volume or less, but with CD audio, generally speaking its fine ( or is it?? )...

So the question is this. Just how good and accurate is Linux with sound and if the standard default drivers are not the best, are there alternative drivers for Linux ??

I'm not an audiophile, so the standard ALSA sound architecture and my 'High Definition Audio Controller' are fine for my needs.

This article is worth a read.

4Front Technologies develop alternative drivers based on the Open Sound System architecture. Maybe you can try the OSS drivers and compare them. During the early years of linux, they provided working drivers for many exotic kinds of audio hardware. Unfortunately open sourcing their software hasn't worked in their favour. You can read more here.
