Hi all
I hope this is an OK post Well... Linux never stops having problems for me *sigh* Anyway, now I can at least play mp3 files. Which brings me to wmv files and avi files. I can't play them because I lack the Divx codec and stuff like that. But I don't have Internet on my computer and when I tried to install Mplayer and VLC it didn't work. There might be something about this somewhere but frankly, my brain is pretty much dead right now and I can't find anything. I've been sitting for hours with Suse now. How can fix so that I can play avi and wmv files? Thanks for any help

Have you seen this thread?
It provides a lot information for codecs and what not. What repositories do you have enabled? |

I have but I'll try again and see if it works this time
I have no repositories added since I still can't get an Internet connection to the computer I have Suse on.

Wait, so you were trying to install VLC and mplayer from command line or something?
Once you have your internet working, getting the right software installed should be a piece of cake. |

Hello, first what kind of computer are you using
the internet connection might be an easy fix once you are connected you can load repositories to get the codecs you need. |

I think the problem is because he/she can't connect to internet, which mean cannot use any online repos.
There are several way: asking nearby openSUSE user group to ask for dvd repos or download and install the apps one by one, like myself, but it will require lot dependencies. For multimedia player, you could try to compile MPlayer, since it has enough library to play AVI file. Get the source from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html. If you choose to compile, make sure you install 'Base Development' package pattern in Yast. Or you can choose to install from RPM packages, with it dependencies. Get the required RPM from http://packman.links2linux.org/ and http://software.opensuse.org/search No clue about WMV file, but try searching for w32codec RPM package. |

I have something for people without internet connections like yourself. You can download all required stuff as zip archives elsewhere, maybe at work or at an internet cafe, or have someone post it to you on a cd. Please have a look at this thread

superppl: I tried installing VLC from a rpm package but it didn't work, saying I needed something else that I didn't have.
TKS: I'm using a wireless connection, which has been bugging me for quite some time. We're trying to solve the connection issue in the Network & Security forum. init7: I tried to install MPlayer from somewhere when it was an rpm package because the tar.gz files I can't install for some reason (or it's beyond my intelligence). nucleauskore: Oooh. This is something I haven't seen, I'll definitely try it out. Keep your fingers crossed. If it doesn't work, I'll edit this post
