I have installed the latest version of VLC, and when I want to play a video file, the time line goes, but

I don't see video.

Anyone knows what can be the reason?

Thanks!

In cases where an application does not seem to work properly, a general troubleshooting method that is often very helpful, is to launch the application from an xterm/konsole. Then try the application's function that does not appear to be working properly, making note of any error messages that may occur on the xterm/konsole. Then post those error messages on a forum like this (if you can't figure them out). Often error messages that one see's on a konsole provide a vital clue as to what the problem might be.

In the case of "vlc" you can launch it in an xterm konsole by typing: vlc

When I open VLC, everything was ok, no errors, but when I open a video file, I saw:

[00000305] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `FLV1'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Try a video encoded with a different video. This could be codec specific.

As microchip notes, mplayer will play a lot of different formats. A good front end to mplayer is smplayer:
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/

And the packman packagers package a version of smplayer for openSUSE: http://packman.links2linux.de/package/smplayer

I have noticed the same problem with VLC version "e". With every new release there seems to be a new glitch. I use SMPlayer and/or KMPlayer for just about everything these days. To h#$% with VLC.

Yup, I noticed. I'm sure VLC has it's strengths for some things...I just cannot think of any.
