ARCHIVES - Multimedia Don't know how to watch DVDs using mplayer? Asking yourself what the heck mplayer is? This is the right place to ask.

new install of 10.3, all patches and security updates applied. now trying to update xine for dvd playback (from packman.) first it was flac would be invalidated, installed flac. now it's can't update libmp4v2. and there is still something about speex, whatever that is. i'm sure this has been covered 1000 times, but i can't find the solution. can anyone point me to a how-to for 10.3.

thanks.

It reads to me like you are trying to do this the hard way, 1 rpm at a time. The easiest way is the very FIRST thing you do after a new install of openSUSE is to setup your repositories. Once they are setup, then such installations (as xine) are a breeze. Please take a look here:
http://opensuse-community.org/Repositories/10.3

ie:
Quote:
Just head over to YaST -> Software -> Community Repositories, and add:
* OSS
* Non-OSS
* Packman
* Main Update Repository [/b]
With the packman repository added to the remainder, you can then easily select the Packman packaged xine for installation.

Alternatively you can install a package manager such as Smart, and do it that way (via Smart). Here is an excellent guide on installing Smart package manager for 10.3:

i did set up those four repositories. but, whatever was amuck last night is no longer occurring this morning. after allowing for different vendor, the conflicts resolved and the packages installed. i suppose they sometimes pull from different sites and one or more may have been unavailable.

i've been using suse since 9.2, still have one 9.2 machine in production that has never been updated or patched except for third-party apps. i'm more accustomed to the slackware compile and reinstall package methods. this was an interesting experiment.

thanks for "suggesting" me into figuring it out. off to duplicate the effort on the laptop...
