Hi dudes... I've an issue with video editing with Kdenlive (I'm using version 0.5).
Sources are 640x480 videoclips, at 25fps. 640x480 has an aspect ratio of exactly 4/3, but when I export the timeline (I tried with Mpeg and Mpeg4 codecs at 640x480, high quality), I get two ugly vertical black bars at the sides of the exported file.

This is strange, 'cos my sources are exactly 640x480 clips.

Things go a little better choosing Mpeg4 @ 720x576 (which aspect ratio is 1.25, not 1.3333). Vertical bars are tighter, but they still stands there.

How can I solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Try rendering with a different output method. Try with DV(AVI). You can always convert to MPEG with tovid or AVIDEMUX or some other converter.

KDENLIVE is not with out some bugs. ... Sometimes closing the program, then restarting the program and re-importing the project helps. The faster the PC (with more RAM) that better.

ntsc aspect ratio is actually 648 x 486 and the later aspect ratio is more like pal, you may want to check the settings of the editor itself to see what kdenlive thinks the project is intended for. some editors will add the vertical lines in anticipation of cropping, motion tracking, manipulation, export to other formats, etc, etc, in order to have the entire frame within view....

here are some links to help you tweak it

link 2 (kdenlive forum)

link 3 (article on pluses and minuses of the kdenlive nle)

link 4 (this gives you exact aspect ratios for various formats)

With DV(AVI) I get the same trouble. I did so: I copied the settings from Mpeg4-720x576-HighQuality, and I created a custom setting named "Test", changing the destination resolution to 704x576:

Code:
format=avi video_rc_min_rate=0 video_bit_rate=8000000 audio_bit_rate=384000 frequency=48000 size=704x576 vcodec=mpeg4 mbd=2 trell=1 v4mv=1 progressive=1
Now, I get final exports that behave perfectly when I play them with mplayer and VLC: the size is automagically stretched to 768x576 by that players, and the result is good (strangely, if I set directly size=768x576 into options, I don't get this result).

Now I get another issue: I tried to produce a DVD with a DVD authoring program on another PC (I don't have a DVD burner). That PC uses Nero Vision (OK, it's not Linux, but the question is related to AVI format, not to Nero), and when I import my video produced with Kdenlive and options above, I get that ugly black bars again at the sides of the movie.

What's the matter?

P.S. I tried this experiment: I imported the movie in AVIDEMUX, then used the option "Auto/DVD" converting... from "4:3" to "4:3", and... the bars appeared again! How is it possible, turning from 4:3 to itself?

Thanks again for your patience.

I do use the PAL format, with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and 25fps.
Now I'm reading kdenlive forum, it seems that someone got the same problem.

I'll keep you informed if I'll solve the issue.

IMHO this is not openSUSE specific, ... but rather its KDENLIVE specific. Your best chance of sorting this may be to go to that forum.

I don't have this problem with KDENLIVE ... I mix all sorts of videos and still images with KDENLIVE ... and IMHO assuming the problem is not in your original videos, then you have unwittingly changed a setting in KDENLIVE that is causing this problem.

Would you copy-and-past here the settings you're using, so I could compare them with mine?

Thanks in advance!

Again, I confirm that, according to my attempts, the best setting I got is that obtained by copy-and-past from MPEG4/720x576/HighQuality, and creating a new one changing from 720x576 to 704x576 (which ratio IS NOT 4/3!!!): players like VLC and Mplayer stretched the window automatically to have an aspect ratio of 4/3.

The issue comes back when creating a DVD: the DVD authoring program I used (a Nero Vision on my brother's PC - I don't have a DVD burner) did not stretch the output and the black bars appear again at the sides of the movie.

I just use the default settings for DV (avi):
http://picpaste.com/pics/kdenlive01a_1.1204584081.jpg

... ie ... (assuming I don't make a typo retyping - if in doubt, look at the pix):
Code:
format=avi vcodec=dvvideo ildct=1 pix_fmt=yuv420p acodec=pcm_s16le size=720x576 profile=dv_pal
(note that is acodec=pcm_(S)(one)(six)(L)(E) [but lower case]).
