ARCHIVES - Multimedia Don't know how to watch DVDs using mplayer? Asking yourself what the heck mplayer is? This is the right place to ask.

mplayer says:
[VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
[VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read

but when I run xvinfo:
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
no adaptors present

and xdpyinfo lists:
XVideo

So I'm not really sure what xvinfo is telling me, but xdpyinfo says I have XVideo. Now, mplayer says I don't have Xvideo. So there is a capitialization difference, but I don't know if that's really significant.

Do I really have XVideo support? If so, why doesn't mplayer think I do have it? I'm using the mplayer from pacman, not one I compiled myself.

Do I need to compile it myself?

Is the capitilization really significant?

i, for some reason, also had a few problems with MPlayer, have you tried using kaffeine and getting all the w32 codecs and libdvdcss2 stuff? i did that with a simple 1 click install thing, now it plays .avi, .wma, .mpg etc etc, all the formats i could want. or you could try vlc media player?

this means that mplayer hasn't support yet for your GPU, regardless if you have XV support in the X Server

I have tried it, but it doesn't seem to work very well. I've always had best luck with mplayer.

I try codeine, and it does ok, but really, not as good as mplayer.

Thanks - I never would have figured that out. I suppose I should install the nvidia driver, but the instructions on what to do if a kernel upgrade invalidates it makes me nervous.

It's easy to fix the nvidia drivers after a kernel update.
Download the driver and put it in a directory under home. I use nv.
To install the driver logout and do a console login there's a menu at the bottom left of the login screen.
Log in as root cd to the directory with the driver eg
cd /home/yourusername/nv
ls shows dir contets then for the latest driver
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg1.run answer yes/ok to all the questions
When the driver has finished installing type exit
Log in as normal user and type startx
Note if you just type your username and wait a few seconds it usually brings you to the normal log in screen without having to type startx.

After a kernel upgrade your system will boot to a console where you repeat the above
