ARCHIVES - Multimedia Don't know how to watch DVDs using mplayer? Asking yourself what the heck mplayer is? This is the right place to ask.

not to be picky (let's assume that we can count)
linux_learner (first post) provided three links your post has four. Looks like some sort of auto PR

I would say that three links of four, this is not too many.

Red face

Hello all,
I am newbie to linux. I installed SuSe 10.2 3 days ago on my IBM ThinkPad R50e series laptop.
Look wise SuSe 10.2 looks descent. If 3D acceleration is enabled, it gives more shine. <_<

I was unable to play AVI,MPEG files via Kaffeine or Totem. XINE was not in Multimedia listings.
I downloaded RPM of "mplay" for Fedora Core 6 and tried to install. But it failed to install due to unavailibilty of dependancies.

I configured Yast2 manager and connected to sofwtare update server of SuSe and picked all Totem releted, multimedia releted plug ins. Now i can play AVI, MPEG files via Totem.

Next target is to solve acpid issue. I'll submit this problem in appropriate section. So, dont panic, run Yast sofwtare update manager and download plugins & you'll be able to play most video,DVD movies via Totem. <_<

Regards,
Amey.

Get MPlayer from the Packman repository and you'll be able to play anything out of the box, even encrypted DVDs (no need to install libdvdcss for MPlayer as MPlayer cracks DVDs natively)

Also, packages which are compiled for Fedora are not compatible with SUSE and vica versa

have a look here for 32bit http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.2/i586/
& here for 64bit http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.2/x86_64/
or look on packman's http site http://packman.links2linux.de/category/1
http://packman.links2linux.de/search?scope...e&q=mplayer

just make sure you have any dependencies for it

http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/MP3_on_SUSE_Linux_10.1

after you went this page you can try your own version(like 10.2 .......*****.) when you try to enter source

split the source address

first part:
ftp.uni-erlangen.de

second part:
/pub/mirrors/packman/suse/10.1 (*******)

Too many links provided in the first post, IMO, and a lot of that info is dated and might not specifically be for your openSUSE version. I recommend following this howto, below (from http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/index.ph...owtopic=50480):

This howto is version-agnostic (presuming 10.0+), as the tutorials are demarcated into version sections. Firstly, there is adding the relevant Package Sources:
http://opensuse-community.org/Package_Sources

This will add:
  • Online Source
  • Packman
  • Guru
Once your package sources are enabled, you can then simply install the necessary packages you will require for enabling certain Restricted Formats:
http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_Formats

This includes:
  • MP3 Playback
  • Playing Encrypted DVDs
  • Playing DiVX/xvid videos, and
  • Windows Codecs

xine from packman is my favorite for Kaffein player, it almost support every media even though QuickTime. You have to take care of dependencies, but it is easy to understand...

The nice thing about forums and threads, is that it can be updated, such as what you just did. If you check the date of the first post, which I made the first post, then you'll see it predates the opnsuse-community. I certainly don't mind you advertising opnsuse-community, but to bash a member or a post is inexcusable.
