Mplayer works if I select title2 from the DVD menu, but I can't get the DVD's menu sequence. Title 1 doesn't work.
Gxine and Codeine won't let me navigate so I can't use them on these DVDs.

No problem at all. But now what seems to be the problem is a few bits of code or other error somewhere between the bbc splash and the menu, perhaps something which seeks something out within particular proprietary apps specifically. Or just a hiccup of some sort which our apps or your dvdrw doesn't know how to handle (I've seen this before, a slight error on the disc and it will load just fine on a dvdplayer, but hang on my sony dvdrw). I kinda had a feeling that if all was installed correctly the problem existed just before menu load.
anyway good news, a minor hack to get the good doctor into action again
