The k3b rpm from http://packman.inode.at/suse/10.1 is broken, I was not able to install k3b until I changed to http://ftp.gts.lug.ro/packman/suse/10.1. I download the package as well as attempting to use yast2 and smart before realizing that it was a broken package. Many multimedia packages are similar. I don't know to what extent yast2, zen-updater, rug and zmd are involved however I uninstalled the latter three packages. With good repositories smart worked perfect. Yast2 with good repositories may still be a good package manager.
All multimedia applications in 10.1 dependent on software with copyright issues need deleting and reinstalling from packman or guru. The Jem report about hacking suse 10 remains relevant however the details have changed.... http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/178/42/

To get smart download it from guru see link , don't use the included distro version.

Below is a link for Packman mirrors, some are bad!
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=17225

Conclusion: 10.1 might be good, some mirrors may be responsible for multimedia problems.

It's still possible suse 10.1 is a great multimedia operating system, it's mirrors of packman are a major problem, they contain many broken multimedia packages! All mirrored repositories should be consistent....their not! When I see the same package in different mirrors which are not equal I wonder why!
$50billion could explain this in a very corrupt world! Something akin to md5sum surely must be used?.

My Yast2 will not accept downloaded rpm's for installation by just clicking on the package. Hence I would suppose it is broken, it is possibly best not used. This leaves smart which appears perfect or apt4suse which I have not tried as useful gui's and of course the terminal approach.

What if the broken packages I downloaded from the mirrors broke Yast2? They exist, they have size, but are not what their supposed be, they have been run with root privileges.

ALL MIRRORS AND REPOSITORIES ARE NOT EQUAL

Maybe we should wait sometime? I think some mirrors are broken because they arent synced yet.

Agreed, I'm just making people aware of the problem, it should be easy to resolve. Why does it seem to revolve around packages with copyright issues.....hmmm? The k3b version I downloaded is tied to k3b-mad which enables mp3's to be burnt to audio cd's, but it is not the only multimedia package affected. Maximum security at the repositories is essential if Linux is to become mainstream for consumers. Microsoft has to badly damage Linux very soon or conceed huge market share.

I have found other problems in my install, I use multiple hardrives, 10 is back on my desktop!

1) multimedia on SuSe have special section in the howto's
2) repositories on Suse have special section in the howto's
3) you can add packman and guru to Yast repositories and install using Yast
4) Suse 10.1 still provides old school Yast: y2pmsh
5) add repositories to smart if you want to use smart
6) never had problems with broken multimedia packages, it is possible that something happened while you have been downloading packages

Only when I changed the repository did I manage to install K3b. If I tried to install it from the command line (when in my home folder) it claims 'no package to install'. Prior to that both yast2 and smart produced the same result automatically downloading from the repository. What could happen three times in different ways? Anything is possible but it was logical to conclued the package was broken.

Broken packages are quite common for a variety of reasons.
