Fill your boots as user root. Enjoy your multimedia, when you get it working.

My reasons for not liking using the root is the complete access that is given to the system should anyone get in through a backdoor in a package which has been tampered with or even just a hacker. I also change my passwords if my pc behaves strangely, yes I know I'm paranoid, but it's not 'their out to get me' it's 'their out to get us'.

One other thing Guru doesnt work nor does packman, no matter what, i have tried to put them in using YOU where is says user defined server and it gives me and error.[/b]
Format is everything. When adding links make SURE that the top linein the interface only has the website URL like

packman.sharewarestorage.com

and that the second line contains the path to the repository

archive/suse/10.1/
Note: no slash at the begining fof the second line etc.
I usually go to the repository mirror using a web browser and poke around looking for the "proper" directory to match my system version. I then cut and paste the various protions of the URL into the sources lines in yast and things "normally get happy.

Alos make sure to set the refresh on at least the first time in to make sure that packages are read.

Finally in 10.0 I had to make sure that the CD/DVD source was present to see any packages - odd but true.

Oh and i still use root, i need good solid proof and reasons not to use it, not just your word! Give me those reasons and i will switch, what are you soo worried about why do most big comapnies use linux; because its more secure and stable, i have talked with some ppl, who use suse and they say it is really hard to get viruses and spyware/trojans/worms/and malware.[/b]

I am a network support person. One of my users insisted on using root becasue he avoided typing on a password "all the time". He also managed to reset all the rights in the /usr/bin directroy which broke all sorts of stuff and ultimately since he was running as the super usre found that certain types of malware had no trouble 'self installing" on the otherwise secure and stable linux box.

just because most folks run Windows with administrator rights doesn't mean that such action is a healthy practice. To be honest it probablhy leads to a major portion of the problems with the system we are so happy to crow about.
