I haven't looked very much, but I was wondering what people use to make DVDs? I've used dvdauthor to make the menu/title, but it didn't work very well. So I was looking for a tutorial or what not on how other people do it.[/b]
The easiest way to do this is to run MS-Windows apps under Linux. (Something which I refuse to do).

So if you are silly and stubborn like me, and refuse to use Windows apps under wine, then it can be painful at times. I mainly use "tovid" and "KDE DVD Author Wizard". Some apps to consider are (all of which use dvdauthor in one form or another).

dvdstyler [frontend for dvdauthor and dvd-slideshow – single movie/single menu]
http://dvdstyler.sourceforge.net/docs-linux.html
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdstyler/
Help Forum: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=318795
http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=501
I never got it to work very well under SuSE-9.3 (in fact, I never successfull burned a DVD with it).

dvdwizard [wrapper-script automate creation of DVD chapters/menu's. Needs dvdauthor],
http://udrecsuite.sourceforge.net/
[No english home URL but there is a german page]:
http://www.wershofen.de/downloads/dvdwizard.tar.gz
A Slightly more dated source forge page:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...lease_id=203206
For Suse there is Packman:
http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=600

jubler [(v.2.0.0) a java based tool to edit text-based subtitles. It can be used an an authoring software for new subtitles or as a tool to convert, transform, correct and refine existing subtitles].
http://www.panayotis.com/jubler/
jubler-2.0.0 [requires v.1.5.0 or greater of Sun Java Runtime Environment]
I never tried this.

KDE DVDAuthorWizard [Create video DVD with multiple titles & menu. Requires transcode, mjpegtools, sox, kommander (part of kdewebdev), ImageMagic, mplayer and optional(recommended) xine and k3b]
http://pingwing.xs4all.nl/view.php/page/DVDAuthor
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=27528v
[Kommander script - unpack the archive and run the 'Installer.kmdr' script or DVDAuthorWizard.kmdr direct]
This is one of the two main packages that I use. I have used this a lot.

klvemkdvd [front end for lvemkdvd - build DVD file systems from mpeg files]
http://lvempeg.sourceforge.net/klvemkdvd.html
I had to compile my own for SuSE-9.3. I confess, I found it somewhat puzzling, and never did a complete DVD author with it. I haven't tried to compile it yet for SuSE-10.0.

kmediafactory [authoring done by dvdauthor, ffmpeg, ImageMagick]
http://susku.pyhaselka.fi/damu/software/kmediafactory/
I never did complete burning a DVD with it. Primarily I think, because there are better tools available.

Linux Video Maker [graphics interface (GUI) for transcode, mplex, DVDAuthor and few other programs. Useful for DVD/(S)VCD structure generating, ready for record on CD/DVD. Written in Java so it needs Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to work]
http://www.videomaker.dnc.pl/
http://freshmeat.net/projects/videomaker/
I haven't installed this yet on my PC.

lvemkdvd [linux video editor - part of lve package]
http://lvempeg.sourceforge.net/
I haven't used this, even though I have it installed.

lxdvdrip [command line rip, author, preview, burn]
http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en...title=lxdvdrip – home
http://developer.berlios.de/projects/lxdvdrip – download
http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=603 - packman
Another package that I have installed, but haven't used.

pgcedit [a DVD IFO and Menu editor designed to allow the modification of the navigation commands and parameters of an already authored DVD structure]
http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/
This program by itself, is not enough to create a DVD. Its supposed to help in the authoring process, but I confess my knowledge of DVD's is too weak to take advantage of this.

polidori [a DVD Authoring System for Gnome and Linux. It integrates several command line tools (dvdauthor, dvdrtools, ogle, etc) already available for Linux]
http://polidori.sourceforge.net/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/polidori
I haven't installed this on my PC.

QCreateVOB [a VOB (DVD) movie creator that uses transcode, ffmpeg, sox, and multimux. It supports visual gamma correction and border selection along with many movie formats including AVI, MPEG, WMV, RM, and MOV].
http://qcreatevob.sourceforge.net/
http://freshmeat.net/projects/qcreatevob/
I created a custom rpm using check install, but I never got around to using it.

qdvdauthor [gui frontend for dvd-author and dvd-slideshow]
http://qdvdauthor.sourceforge.net/
http://packman.links2linux.org/?action=473
I wasted a couple of weekends trying to get this to compile and work on SuSE-9.3, and I finally gave it up. Its far too much a beta for my limited level of Linux knowledge.

tovid [A suite of shell scripts to make VCD, SVCD and DVD authoring easier. Converts arbitrary video formats into (S)VCD/DVD-compliant mpeg, and can help with menu creation and disc authoring].
http://tovid.sourceforge.net/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tovid
Support/develpment user/developer forum: http://www.createphpbb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=tovid
This is one of the two main packages that I use. I have used it a lot.

varsha [java frontend to dvdauthor, dvd+rw-tools, mkisofs, mjpegtools etc...]
http://varsha.sourceforge.net/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/varsha
I installed it, but never used it.

Edit (25-May-06) : I am maintaining this list of applications on the following URL

Glad it works for you. Also give the program "tovid" (and "tovid-gui") a try. It doesn't have the fancy menu system that KDE DVD Author Wizard has, but it can be useful for other DVD creation occasions.

Does it work still, Dvdstyler, in Suse 9.3/10. Certainly on other distros it is now falling over - something to do with one of the dependencies (mjpeg tools) having been updated and broken, dvdstyler wise.

Yes DVDStyler 1.4 seems to be broken (atleast for me) try 1.3_beta.

One of the big advantages of KDE DVDAuthorWizard is the easy option to create animated menus btw.

@oldcpu this evening I will give tovid a try.

i would like to try KDE DVDAuthorWizard, but it requires Kommander. I cannot get this app to install on Suse 10. Here's the last bit of what i get trying to make the app:

is this enough to help me figure out what depency i may be missing or what the problem is?

THanks,

nevermind, apparently the Kommader library files are installed with KDEwebdev. All i had to do was click the Installer.kmd file for KDEDVDAuthorWizard, and it installed for me

Glad to read KDE DVD Author Wizard is now running for you. When you get the chance, also check out "tovid" and its gui "tovid-gui".

Help please.

Trying to install DVD Author Wizard but cannot install Transcode on SuSE 10. I get a dependancy issue in Yast asking for libpvm3.so.3 and saying requires pvm >=3.4.5

I cannot find a libpvm so I'm well and truly stumped

My guess is libpvm comes with pvm or with pvm-devel. Both of those packages in v.3.4.5 come with SuSE-10.0. Are they installed on your PC? If not, install them with Yast.

Please, how are you installing transcode? Did you download the rpm from packman? Are you using a 32-bit or 64-bit SuSE?

I installed transcode without a hitch. So its do-able.

What package manager are you using? Only YaST? APT? Smart?

There is a good thread (just do a search) on suselinuxsupport about the merits of installing the 3rd party Smart package manager, in order to do away with many of these dependency problems. Also, SuSE-10.0 comes with APT and APT4RPM, which can also take the pain away from installing packages (such as transcode) which have many dependencies to consider. You might wish to consider investing a few evenings now, installing another package manager (I recommend smart) to help augment YaST. And only after you have that sorted out, then proceed with installing other 3rd party apps.

Thanks oldcpu,

I have apt4suse set up (SuSe10 - 32 bit) and have been trying to use that. Unfortunately I could not get Transcode set up via Synaptic even after installing libpvm (which did install via Synaptic). I got the following errors:

First:
W: Failed to fetch ftp://ftp4.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuS...0.pm.3.i686.rpm
Unable to fetch file, server said 'Failed to open file. '

Second (after refreshing the repositories):
APT system reports:
Error(s) while checking package signatures:
0 unsigned package(s)
7 package(s) with unknown signatures
0 package(s) with illegal/corrupted signatures

So, I went back to Yast and Transcode installed fine. You advice re libpvm was spot on

Hopefully I will now be able to get dvd author wizard working. I'll try when I get home from work this evening.

Turning to SMART, I played with this a little on Mandriva and liked very much what I saw. I also read somehere (I think) that it was to be the future package manager for SuSe and that apt4suse would be dropped. I'll have a read and give it a whirl in SuSE10. If I remember correctly it uses the apt repository file so set-up should be simple enough.

Thanks for all your help. It is appreciated.
