I've added a second SATA drive to my Windows XP PC. I want to install SuSE Linux 10.2 on the second drive. Do I need to create a FAT partition on the new drive prior to starting the install?

2nd question: Will the installer add another boot option to the master boot record on the first drive so that I get the option to start up either XP or Linux when I start up my PC?

Any other tips regarding the planned installation would be appreciated.

in similar situation, I added new disk as a first
installed on first disk linux
edited menu.lst
so for windows it lists:
# (4) Windows
title Windows XP Pro
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader (hd1,0)+1

with the above windows will still think that it is installed on first disk
you don't need to edit fstab if you don't want to access windows partition from linux

that was all

Am not sure why you look to creating a FAT partitions -- if it is because you want to be able to write between the two OS's, As from openSUSE 10.3 NTFS (read/write) is now supported.

As far as boot loader is concerned that is up to you -- the default will replace the mbr and add option to boot XP.

installing linux on the first disk and moving windows to second, will prevent touching mbr of windows disk. This is more flexible option as quite often, users after deciding that linux is not for them complain about grub. It also allows to select default boot loader at any time without much of work.

This is something I haven't thought of before-- it is a good idea -- for noobs, you have to know how then to edit grub to boot your other operating systems.
