Hi.
I'm in the process of upgrading my hardware to a core2 duo.
Just wondering if its also worth upgrading to 10.3 x64.

Honestly IMO I would say depends on usage, for such little gains I see, I question why.

I do use 64bit have done for a while it is relatively transparent but every now and again you do get the odd just 64bit problem. From the little reading I've done and my experience, most gains are seen on video apps, encryption and DB's.

Suse's 64bit makes it relatively easy, in comparison to some other distro's, probably is one of the better implementations.

Never had problems with codecs but if mplayer/media player doesn't handle it natively then you may encounter problems. Then its just the flash stuff after that just met the odd thing never any show stoppers.

Hi,

i thinks there should be no problem of using 64bit. I used 64bit since 10.0 but in 10.0 there were running so much 32bit instead of 64bit (for example openoffice and firefox). But things got much better since then so you should normally get no problems with 64 bit, and in case that some problems with a specific software occur you can run the 32bit version (with the needed 32bit libraries installed).

Actually, with x86_64, you're going to have to do a lot of compiling because many people don't offer their packages in 64 bits. But you can install and run it as 32 bits, so it really doesn't matter.
Oh yeah, some one also told me about a certain utility called nspluginwrapper. Apparently, it lets you load 32-bit apps on a 64-bit firefox, worth checking out.

I use it and can't really fault it. I can't understand what all fuss is about with Flashplayer, it works fine.
Again, as others have said, everything just works a treat. Worth it in my opinion.

I am using x86_64 openSuSE 10.3 on my laptop. I have installed the 64 bits packages of most of the applications I use (which include a full install of Oracle 10g).

I have also installed the 64 bits versions of java, Firefox and Opera. The flash and java plugins only come in 32 bits' flavour. Flash works without a glitch in either browser (this includes konqueror), but java is a different story. I have personally chosen no to install the java plugin because it won't work with a 64 bits' java install (and perhaps with the 64 bits version of both Opera and Firefox). That said, it was my decision to go for 64 bits' java, mostly because some bits of Oracle 10g need java and because of JDeveloper, which is a pure java application that interacts nicely with Oracle. I am using both for some work project and for preparing for the SCBCD certification, so it is important for me that both of them work fine.

As for java embedded in web pages: I don't get to visit too many pages that make use of it (in fact since installation, I did not get to browse any), but in case I would need to I can open the page in konqueror: the good thing is that konqueror does not need the java plugin at all.

Anyways, I still hope some day Sun's releases a 64 bits version of the plugin (the evilness of closed source: had we had the source code available, there would be a 64 bits package already).

Thanks for all the info guys.
I think I'll give the 64bit version a go.
Have a full backup so I can go back if i don't get things working as i like.
