I recently tried to install this version of SUSE (10.3). The system boots from the CDROM and then i have a freeze up on module pata_it821x. I did some research and saw where you could type brokenmodules=pata_it821x. It works fine by putting that code in on the install options. But when i get to the part where it asks for the repository disks, it cannot find the CD anymore. Does pata_it821x control the CD or am i missing more disks?

Here's the file i burned to 1 cd. openSUSE-10.3-GM-KDE-x86_64.iso

Here is my system specs

Time of this report: 4/25/2008, 11:13:05
System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: GT5628
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 3054MB RAM
HD: Model: ST3500630AS (Setup as raid in bios) i think its a SATA.
Total Space: 476.9 GB

DVD: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A SCSI CdRom Device

Last time in stalled Linux it did it right from the 1 cd but that was on my other computer that was least superior in technology.

You are using the wrong cd if your processor is 32 bit; the cd you are using is for 64 bit processor.

Update: from what I read online it is 32/64 bit, so I am not sure

After wasting about 12 CD's i figured out the problem. When you download files in Windows Vista. ISO Files are flagged "Blocked" it didn't dawn on me to right click on the file and hit the unblock this file before burning it to cd would be the cause of this problem.

After unclicking the unblock feature of windows vista on the 64bit iso it loaded the install system and found everything it need. It didn't have anything to do with pata_it821x it had to do with windows Vista's secruity features. Well i didn't really get the 64 bit installed yet, i quickly came back to post it found the install files. Thanks for your help i'll let you know on the 64 bit after im up and running again.

Thanks Jroberts for posting this solution. Vista seems very problematic when it comes to doing things.

By the way; Welcome to the Forum! B)

I have an update on what happend this weekend.

I tried burning the 32bit version after unblocking the ISO and it loaded fine…. (Previous burns did not have block removed and they failed). Leads me to believe the block feature of windows vista caused all of the problems. I could not find anything on Microsoft.com that has anything that isn’t vague about this issue. I tried the 64bit version but even after unblocking the ISO and burning it, it didn’t want to load. I guess my computer doesn’t support 64 bit. I’m not to great at this subject so I’m just using the 32bit version for now. I was using a 32bit version of windows vista before so I figure it’s ok to use the 32 bit ver of Linux.

Problems I ran into

• Linux cannot handle writing or adjust a partition with Vista on it. I had to nuke all the partitions and have Linux re-make them.
• Linux has a hard time with streaming audio. It is choppy and doesn’t buffer. Streaming audio playback is impossible for me
• Linux doesn’t have the really crisp graphics in Open GL games, I noticed a stairway chop on the alias with one of my games even with anti-aliasing on 8x and the driver settings on max. In Vista it’s much sharper.
• The suse update program kept thinking I had to update a program called ephinany which kept on annoying me.
• It took me an hour to figure out how to make the “Console” choice on the Windows Manager to appear so I could load the Nvidia driver in non-X mode.

Things I liked

• I can change the interface of the windows manager
• You can see everything loading and it feels like you’re a spaceship going to take off with everything loading.
• One click library installers like codecs and video lan were nice.
• Nvidia has a linux driver for my video card.
• Linux found a bad sector on my drive and windows did not. (Still troubleshooting this issue) but I still like it found one.
• Noticed that MPEG and other videos , DVD’s are sharper graphics and clean running. I don’t have any “Catchup fast motions” or anything.
• It found all my external drives and mounted them automatically.

All in all, I am having a good time using Linux but miss the nice graphics in my game I play, and streaming audio and video chopping and cracking puts a unhappy face on my face, other then that I’m pretty happy. Thanks for the help.

post something in the multimedia section about the audio/video problems. There are some very knowledgeable people there that can help - give as much info as possible.

Linux is actually very good at streaming audio and video.

someone suggested that you booted 64-bit on 32-bit hardware. This seems to be impossible.

linux can read/write to NTFS partitions. You need to activate this option. I would not use anything else for resizing partitions than windows tool. Since w2k windows has very good partitioner, so what you should to is to de-drafgent and shrink partition from Vista and then install linux, finally add required modules to read NTFS

seems like configuration problem. I don't have any issues with choppy audio/video even during heavy cpu/disk usage by other programs. My laptop is less powerful that your system.

As garyg suggested post problem description on Multimedia forums.

you will need to tweak video settings (this may be more or less efficient depending on video card)

try to set tabu on epiphany, change repositories

console is not taking any advantage of nvidia driver irrelevant of nvidia module running or not. You may patch kernel and enable specific options in grub menu if you want fancy console. Windowed terminal window follows DE/WM settings. Some terminals are more fancy some are less.

Wanted to let people know i fixed the streaming audio by going to Yast > Hardware > sound > Edit > ICH9 Family HD Audio COntroler > Fix DMA Pointer > Value 3.

Value 3 is FIFO Size whatever that is, it fixed it.

Thanks for the other comments about twweaking the video cards, i'm going to take a look at that soon.
