How do you shrink an existing partition so I can get some space to create a new partition and install a new distro on it? My existing partition has SuSe 9.3 on ReiserFS I think. Will I be able to access files in my old partition?

Depends on the partition its possible with yast partitioner, easier with live gparted no matter what the partition is.

adding to feathermonkey's post, gparted is an excellent tool i have used a few times now. if you make 1 partition big enough, the new installation of the distro should pick it up (i.e. you should only need to shrink one partition, and not format it to ext3 or whatever...) and then the installer of the distro will be able to format it, partition it so it has a swap (though it should use your swap from your current distro), and if you like, a separate partition for your new /home
hope makes you a little more certain also, make sure you back up ALL important data before attempting any partitioning. Ross. |
