hello, I wanted to install suse, to dual boot with windows xp, installed fine, and yes, overwrote mbr, so i used ultimate boot cd/super grub to remove grub, then fix the mbr, was fine, and able to boot back into windows, but still not suse, so i used bootpart to try and make the xp boot menu show the option...but it wouldn't work, then i remembered that grub (or something else) needed to be installed on the linux partition, so thats where my problems began. I think i tried to install grub to that partition, not quite sure exactly what i did (think i tried another loader, gag? ) not sure what happened after that, but now, I cant even access my windows hard drive in suse. says cant mount, etc...my question is, isthere any way to remedy this (i have some data I'd like to access, or even put it back to the way it was, or should i just use something to copy the data i need to another partition, and reinstall windows?
I appreciate any help you can give...oh, I tried to use supergrub to remove grub and fix the mbr, but no go, my computer still loads grub and gets to a command prompt grub>
maybe i can typesomething there??thanks for reading...oh, and yes, im a noob to linux, but otherwise, i kinda know what im doing (most of the time)

Sorry, you didn't explain why you removed grub?

Try booting from your openSUSE install CD/DVD. there should be an option to 'Boot from Hard Disk'. If you can get suse up and running, you can then post the output (as root) of

fdisk -l
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

This will help to determine correct menu.lst entries associated with your OS partitions.

Another option is to boot from a live CD and mount the desired hard disk partitions from there. You can access data, reinstall grub if necessary, and edit menu.lst if required.

Calm down.
Too much fiddling.

If I were you, I would tell us what you want.
Do you want to just have windows and get rid of linux
or
Do you want windows and linux

We can help you from there.

By the way. Knoppix is the best live distro to boot for all kinds of fixes

ok, I have fixed windows using the recovery console, and fixboot, fixmbr. I still have suse installed but i cant boot from it unless I use the suse disk and boot from that. I would still like to use it, and still be able to boot windows if i want...Should I try to fix/install grub? or should I just reinstall suse (which I hope would recognize my windows installation) and will it allow me to dual boot?

Install grub - the reason I asked (but you didn't explain) why you uninstalled it in the first place was to discover if there was some sort of problem with it.

If suse is a new install, I mean you only recently installed it and it doesn't have data you need. I would do a re-install of suse. If you want, you can choose to keep your existing /home data by choosing "do not format" during install.
Remember to choose a mount point for your xp partition - like /windows c
I always use the custom partitioning setup during install.
If you didn't do this last time, suse may have shrunk your xp partition to install suse.
Install grub to mbr
And you are done

Your partitions should look like this:

/windows c

swap 521mb+ or twice RAM
/ (this is the root partition) ext3 10gig will be enough
/home ext3 give as much space as you can

I would just boot to suse using the install disk "boot installed system" option, then use yast to install grub - but hey, I just like doing things the fast, easy way.
