Hi All,
I am still struggling to make any progress here and really need someone to please help me. I forlornly hoped that the SUSE developers would be keeping an eye on these forums and would be able to contribute their expertise, but it seems not to be the case. Thanks to those who have so far contributed to this thread, but I am just as puzzled now as I was when I raised the query. To recap: I have 3 SUSE 10.0 systems that I've been keeping more or less in sync. After the last set of security updates that I downloaded via YaST, one system developed this problem with the $home/.dmrc file, whilst the other two did not. The thing is I cannot find this file on any of my systems, unlike all the other folks who've responded. I've asked several times for guidance as to whether I've been looking in the right places with the right commands and so far no-one has indicated that I've been doing anything wrong, though also no-one has told me how they are displaying this file. However, I can't believe that this file is missing on all my systems, so I assume I must be doing some thing wrong. Can someone please look at my previous postings and tell me if I've been looking incorrectly, or confirm that I have been looking correctly, thanks? I need to know whether this file exists on my systems. Until then I can't progress this issue. If it turns out I've been looking correctly, then can someone explain what might be going on here? I really hope someone can help, thanks Rob |

All,
I guess I'd have to call it a case of two steps forward and one back. I am not sharing my home directory with windows on any of my systems. I've checked through the forum threads suggested by deltaflyer and have tried the various commands contained in them to no avail. So I decided to add another userid to my system using YaST from the root userid, which worked fine and there large as life was the .dmrc file in /home/myuserid2 It contained two lines as follows: [Desktop] Session=gnome So I thought I'd try and recreate this file in /home/myuserid with exactly the same content and file ownership and permissions. Having done this and confirmed the file was in place I tried rebooting the system. Unfortunately the system still failed to log in to myuserid giving the same error as before. Having again logged in as root I copied all the files across from myuserid to myuserid2 and then deleted the failing 'myuserid'. Just to make sure I then rebooted the system again and got no boot error message this time. I was able to log in as both myuserid2 and root without problems. So I then re-added myuserid under YaST and having done so the .dmrc file is there in /home/myuserid looking exactly the same as when I recreated it. I'm at a loss to explain why the file creation failed, but the userid being re-added worked. I then rebooted and lo and behold I get no repeat of the error message. The only difference is that instead of bringing up myuserid automatically as it used to I get the login box and have to login manually. All three userids are currently working fine on this system which was failing before. I have downloaded the latest patches without incident. I still don't know, why this problem is not occurring on my other two systems as I have definitely been looking in the right place with the right commands, but the .dmrc file does not show up on either. The whole thing seems too weird !! Anyway thanx to those who responded. If anyone thinks they know what might have been going on here then please feel free to post suggestions. As things now seem to be working, more or less, I am willing to put this one to bed, unless it rears its ugly head again. To say I am puzzled by all this is an understatement. Too many more glitches like this and Redmond's finest will start to look more attractive - Oh dear! |
