Anyway, at least the computer is generally usable with xgm.

The new kernel update 2.6.22.16-0.1-default i686 appeared to bring releif to my freezing problem. After working wonderfully for about 5 hours, I started writing a blog note on this forum to say all clear now. As if to take revenge the system began to freeze a number of times in quick succession whether kdm or xgm. Once the machine even froze while in the final stage of booting. Sadly, working in xgm is no longer the saviour it was.

Other issues with the new kernel update are that my sound now doesn't work and extensive work on it using oldcpu's guide, installing latest drivers etc has not resolved the issue.

With more success I was able to restart the wifi by re-installing madwifi from the folder I still had with the special workaround by Atheros (described in my first post above). Just a "make clean", "make", "make install", reboot and everything is ok again. I check the madwifi support forums to find that the main madwifi drivers still do not support my chip and there are ongoing and unresolved negotiations with Atheros about it.

Can you post:
a. URL to the latest output of the two diagnostic scripts, and
b. content of your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file?

The URL to the script files can be found on the opensuse audio troubleshooting guide:

Thanks oldcpu, here are the outputs you suggested:
First script
Second script

/etc/modeprobe.d/sound:
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=toshiba
# u1Nb.3dA5hNIudR0:82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

Thanks oldcpu, sound is still broken with the second recent kernel upgrade to 2.6.22.16-0.2-default i686

In running: rcalsasound restart
got the error:
/usr/sbin/alsactl: relocation error: /usr/sbin/alsactl: symbol snd_tlv_parse_dB_info, version ALSA_0.9 not defined in file libasound.so.2 with link time reference
Shutting down sound driver done
Starting sound driver: hda-intel done

Second script

Looking at those script files its quite clear to me why your sound is no longer working. The new kernel install likely removed your alsa-driver-kmp-default file, and hence your PC's alsa driver reverted back to alsa-1.0.14.

You need at least version 1.0.15 of the alsa-driver, and even better version 1.0.16rc2. Please go back to the audio troubleshooting guide, and use it to update your alsa, alsa-driver-kmp-default, alsa-utils, and alsa-firmware to 1.0.16rc2.

All my alsa & alsa-firmware etc (except alsa-oss) is 1.0.16.hg20080122-9.1

Unfortunately, alsa-driver-kmp-default 1.0.15.hg20080208_2.6.22.5_31-1.1 conflicts with kernel-default-2.6.22.16-0.2.i586. I guess Suse will sort this out soon.

However, I was able to re-establish sound by downloading the latest driver alsa-driver-1.0.6rc2.tar.bz2 from here and compiling it into the kernel using the instructions here. Oldcpu, many thanks for your help once again!

It has been sorted. I believe this was your misunderstanding as to the details as to how zypper works or how the openSUSE multimedia web site was setup, ... and it was my mistake in not making these two possibilities clear in the audio troubleshooting guide for new users.

You either had the wrong repository (for multimedia) in your zypper, or you had a repository with the same name I choose (for the multimedia repository) in your zypper, which prevented the assignment of the correct repository, and hence prevented your update. Note I had recommended the repository be removed after installing the updated alsa packages. I did this for a good reason.

On the openSUSE site there are two directories .... one for the 2.6.22.16.0.2 kernel
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/...SE_10.3_Update/ , and one for the 2.6.22.5_31-1.1 kernel:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/.../openSUSE_10.3/

As you become more familiar with openSUSE linux, with zypper, you will be able to spot these nuances earlier.

The alsa-driver-kmp-default was available the same day as the kernel update.

Glad to read you found the alternate compilation method.

Congratulations on sorting your sound.

The different directories for different kernels has indeed been confusing. I have now updated my ALSA repository in Yast > Software > Software Repositories to: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/...SE_10.3_Update/

After executing as root: rcalsasound restart, my sound works fine. However, I still have the following error:
/usr/sbin/alsactl: relocation error: /usr/sbin/alsactl: symbol snd_tlv_parse_dB_info, version ALSA_0.9 not defined in file libasound.so.2 with link time reference
Shutting down sound driver done
Starting sound driver: hda-intel done

Have you an idea what this error means and if it can be fixed?

Edit (oldcpu): format incorrectly quoted an oldcpu post
