I cannot record sound , sound output only from speaker but when i insert the headphone it never works in linux but works in windows ... what to do next ?

Hi Tanmaya. You need to provide your system hardware details to enable others to help you. As a start, open a terminal window and do one of the following (you need to be root first):

hwinfo --sound
lsmod -v

Edit: BTW, have you checked your mixer settings? Make sure that not only is the mic level enabled and up, but that 'Capture' is also turned on.

Actually the problem was i could not record sound. and when external speakers were functional and I inserted my headphone into the jack no audio output in the jack . jop advised me to upgrade my ALSA . as I was running SLED 10 SP 1 he asked to receive all the updates but that was a time consuming process so I directly downloaded the latest alsa for SLED from Suse build service and installed ...and the rest configuration I did as jop asked me to do... and the problem was solved...I proudly say that now all of my hardware works with linux
