Hi there,

I installed opensuse 10.3 on my Samsung Q20 Notebook (855GM Grafik card) and during installtion the screen was ok. After first upgrade and reboot the screen is now partly unreadable and partly flashing. If looks like the frequency on a CRT was wrong but this is an LCD. I tried different setting but everytime I press ok for check the system always goes to 1024x768@75.

The upper left corner is ok but the lower right corner can't even show any symbols.

Somebody know to get around this problem?

Thanks

Is this an Intel graphic card? Does the openSUSE-10.3 release note provide you anything useful?

In particular:

Older Intel Graphics Chips

Older Intel graphics chips are supported by two drivers ( "i810" and "intel" ). The intel driver is the default on openSUSE 10.3 due to the high demand for features like native mode setting (no longer VESA BIOS based) and RANDR 1.2 support.

When updating to openSUSE 10.3, the i810 driver is not exchanged with the intel driver. Use "sax2 -r" to switch to the intel driver.

The intel driver is still not as stable as i810; use "sax2 -r -m 0=i810" to switch back to i810, if you encounter problems that did not occur previously with the i810 driver. In those cases, consider to open a bug report against the intel driver.[/b]

Thanks for the fast answer but it's not fixing my problem.

I attached a external screen and this one is complete stable. The problem I have is that I can't change the frequency, it's always set to 1024x768 @67kHz : 83Hz

I tried also sax2 --vesa 1024x768@60 but it does not change anything

I set the Screen to VESA 1024x768@60HZ but when I test it it's always 83Hz

The problem I have, is other than your saying you tried "sax2" and my "fast" answer did not fix your problem, I do not know what specific sax2 commands you tried, so I have no means of suggesting you try something different.

If I can illustrate what I mean by a question, did you try:
sax2
sax2 -r -m 0=vesa [reset graphics and try vesa driver]
sax2 -r [reset graphics to default intel]
ssax2 -r -m 0=i810 [reset and try the alternative driver]

I know that you may have tried all of the above is very obvious to you (because you did the typing), but as a user reading this, trying to help, I am mostly in the dark. Your general descriptions are good for an over view, but not too helpful for specifics.

Edit: also note you should do these changes from run level 3. ie. boot the PC to run level 3 (by typing 3 in the grub boot menu options line). If you try them from runlevel 5 they won't work.

I could go around the problem and it works now.

I reinstalled OpenSuse 10.3 with 800x600 Screen and VESA Mode (F3 before install) and then changed the resolution to 1024x768 60 Hertz.

No idea why I couldn't change to 60 Hertz before but with this work-a-round is ok for me.

OK - Congratulations.

Glad to read it works for you now, and thanks for sharing your solution.
