I can second the thinkpad recomendations, I have a pretty basic model and I have ran Sled 10, suse 10.1, 10.2 and now 10.3 without any problems. I can also second the stay away from broadcomm comments. I put 10.2 on a friend's dell inspiron 1505 and everything was easy, except for getting the broadcomm wireless card to work. I had to refer to the excellent tutorial on the forum here to get it going with ndiswrapper. That worked and my friend is happy, but if I were buying a new laptop I would certainly stay away from broadcomm.

the pinned thread is also useful http://forums.suselinuxsupport.de/in...howtopic=36202
lots of good suggestions and warnings there, if you pick up a "path already walked" by someone else you can be pretty safe
