Sound in my 10.2x64 Pavilion 6325us lappie works on:
1. boot/shutdown suse music
2. amarok (streaming from the web)

but these don't work:
1. web browser sounds (youtube, online webgames, etc.)
2. Audacity can't find an output device (in the preferences menu, the output device stays blank)

I think it's a driver problem because my laptop has MCP51 audio and that's an nVidia product, but it claims to be HP!! Can anyone give me an idea how to install the right drivers for this unit.

THANKS!
Patti

EDIT: OK, I found where to delete the existing soundcard (sets it to "not configured") and add another one - this time I chose nVidia MCP51 (HDA) which seemed to do OK. What does "start sequencer" mean? Now Audacity gives me the choice of OSS: /dev/dsp and ALSA: HDA NVidia: HDA Generic (hw:0,0). This is beginning to look kinda familiar, but not enough so I can figure it out yet. When I choose ALSA, Audacity gives an error when I try to record - when I choose OSS, it hangs when I try to record. Hmmm... do I need to install ALSA or something...

I never did get the sound working for ut2004 under 10.2 on my pavilion laptop - but it works fine with 10.3. I simply did an update from 10.3 -> 10.3 (not a new installation).

i have same card and same laptop probably (hp dv9000). Im sorry i did not see your first post. Yes sound had some issues out of the box but manually recompiling ALSA drivers would have sorted out all of your problems.
Well remember this as one of the first things to try if in the future you should have other sound problems with any machine and card, if the dont get sorted with a mere card configuration in yast.

As to audacity: i had it working in 10.2 even before recompiling the driver. It was actually very very simple, just enough to change the input device, it picked up a wrong default, you will see a list, the default it think was OSS, you should have played with the few options available and try them all, i think choosing hda-intel entry solved all your problem.
Again, just keep this in mind should it happen again in the future with other versions or machines
