the word "notebook" means a laptop in A4 format. Times change and why not to call this forum Laptops instead Notebooks?

Because the next pedant would complain that he doesn't have a laptop, he has a notebook, or a portable or a ....

At any rate, with the advent of widescreen aspect ratios, your definition of notebook in relation to A4 is rather outdated.

I think most people can get their heads around 'notebook' being a block term for portable computers.

Thanks Eds!!!
How right you are!
However, I am not engineer and I didn’t create any personal norm, rather I learned somewhere about. I am not a lawyer but a current definition, industrially endorsed, can’t be called my own meaning. About portable, I have here some quite portable things but not in A4 format. You gave me a great idea, from now I will call such stuff “the portables”. Finally let me consider the difference between pedantry and precision. In my advice the method is the same but the application object changes. In the first case the application of the method should be unjustified, and here your criticism is possibly appropriate. In terms of human values, please take anyway in consideration my terrible sense of interior frustration after you denied changing notebook in laptop. As matter of consolation and also considering my devotion to Suse, you could reveal me the magic switch, the one under F3, to make install Suse 64 on my new laptop.
In all cordiality

Don't take it personally, the problem with these things often arises because a defined "industry standard" is defined differently in many places and is in fact not 'endorsed' by the industry at all - in fact, that sort of brings up the argument in turn as to who in fact 'the industry' is who should be making judgements on such things.

Shorter version of that is - for every definition you find, you'll find another half a dozen that contradict it.

On to "the key under F3" - not sure what you mean, tell me the laptop make/model and I'll see if I can find a picture of it to try to clarify the matter for you. (or take a snap and post it here).

Hi Eds,
I think you are great. Well, seriously speaking, you are still great and we live in a very fast technological evolution. Such a situation forces the adaptation of obsolete meanings to actual needs, avoiding the constant creation of new words, at least partially. Taking our joke as example, practically there are no longer A4 laptops on sale, at least in middle Europe. It seams logic to modernize the meaning of the term notebook which describes so well the use of this object…At this point you got my head on a silver dish and you could be angry with me. Please, don’t forget you’re belonging to a nation famous in the world for the sense of humour!
Well, now I’ll take the further liberty of putting you on the work but please, do it only when you don’t find anything better to do!

Introduction:
I know quite deeply Windows, API included. However I find catastrophic what they are doing in the last times: they are no longer the people who made 3.1, 95 or even 98. Concerning also the old time, what they did is certainly legal but against my own sense of morality. Finally, we all have enough of nag screens coming with the updates despite we have registered and despite our installations are perfectly legal. I like very much Suse: as musician I need a very good sound quality, even on notebook (for me pitchbook). Usually notebook producers disregard the sound quality and the only known exception is Targa. Combined with Suse64 I got a little sound miracle. Now I have a new notebook model and Suse64 doesn’t want to install anymore. Targa is very popular in middle Europe: sold for very affordable prices and exclusively by Lidl, a big chain of supermarkets, the notebooks have 3 years of full guarantee with home pick up, a fantastic quality and no optional needs. Tv, Webcam, Fingerprint scanner and so on: everything is included. I purchased many exemplars for pupils and friends: everybody is fully satisfied.

Facts:
By attempting to install Suse32, incredibly I get almost everything out of the box. In addition, Debian AMD64 was perfectly installed on the past model which should have the same motherboard, just a little difference in the ATI graphic card model. But by installing Suse64 the installer hangs immediately, equally if in safe mode or with manually disabled features. It doesn’t recognize even the touchpad! I use a registered Suse version 10.0. I must also add that Suse32 provides on this notebook a poor multimedia quality, I don't know why.
As attachment a detailed notebook description: Targa Traveller 836W MT34

Thanks in advance for what you can do and what you can't do!

You've got a Micro-Star based system which are common enough.

With 64bit being as new as it is (relatively speaking) support is improving release on release for it. You may well find that 10.1 would install where 10.0 is failing. Is that an option?

Hi Eds, here the last news:

apt and smart...all done.
My Petra will also leave Windows for Suse: crossover, very inexpensive, makes Suse 100% functional also for professional classic musicians. On the other hand, I can even play chess using Fritz.

The last ATI release takes in consideration the mainboard overheating, I know why. I think that is a fundamental release. However, there is a trap: after installing the daemon, I found in Yast the bool 'enabled=yes', but with a star on the side.

In a few days here begins the vacation time: among other projects I plane putting down the setup procedure for this machine and installing Suse on over 10 PCs. Bye bye Bill. What means converting just a few PCs? Well, in this case cancer extirpation can be infective...

Question: is my Suse 10.0 serial still valid? I must buy anyway many copies of Suse, but one less means some good hot dogs plus dinner with Petra by the Chinese.

Finally, I shame a little bit, but I would have still a couple of questions for you!
First problem:
After installing correctly multimedia all video players crashed, with exception of mplayer which doesn't care about display metric, in my case 1200x800. I was also able to intercept an error message from vlc, 'wrong display size' or similar. By discarding the fglrx xorg.conf and reverting to the original one, possibly vesa and unfortunately 800x600, xine and vlc did also work properly. Until now I didn't find the way to configure the 'vesa' xorg.conf for 1200x800, what should be the right solution because as last step I would configure the right xorg.conf with ATI. I take the liberty of attaching a minimal xorg.conf used to experiment. At this point 'Modes[0]' is not consequently used.

The second problem affects also Suse 10.0: <_<
The animation contained in top windows, for example a screen saver or a video played with kaffeine, makes a very short stop every 5-6 sec. approximatively. The only workaround I found is stealing the focus using another window. Do you know anything about?

once more, thanks a lot,
