A Nooby Haveing A Sound Problem

hello everyone,

as i said im new to linux, suse. today i installed it on my laptop Compaq presario 17xl569. well everything is going well except of my sound, i dont know why but as first is mono and very low. i tried to change it with the mixer but it is not working. and also my microphone is not working at ALL. i think my sound card is ESS Allegro PCI-Audio.
can some one please help me.

What source did you use to test the sound? When you launch the mixer, is the 'Mix Mono' switch on? Try typing 'alsamixer' from a console and have a look at those settings. On my laptop (IBM ThinkPad), I have some hardware audio volume control buttons as well. Is this the case with your laptop?
