I just brought a new broadband gateway that is currently connected to my laptop via an ethernet connection. My question is how do i search for networks on Linux and join them becuase i dont really know how???

I don't quite understand your question, but it won't stop me answering :-)

I use kwifimanager to discover and connect to wireless networks and it works quite good.
