I have the same experience with wireless, in that when travelling, WinXP wireless configures easy, while I'm a newbie in the dark when it comes to linux wireless.

BUT having typed that, I found ethernet 10/100 baseT hardwired Internet connection works better on my Laptop's SuSE, than the same on WinXP. In Bankgok Thailand, in our hotel, SuSE immediately recognized the hotel's 10/100 baseT connection and I was surfing in seconds. But when my wife rebooted to WinXP, it took her an hour to configure it. And then in my hotel in Beijing China (18 months ago) I immediately had SuSE on the internet to the hotel's 10/100 baseT connection, but couldn't get WinXP to connect at all.

Fascinating, I will keep Windows. On reflection there is much to gain by having the best of both worlds. And if one is linked professionally to the Micro$oft world then it's all free (as in pies, chips, sauce and beer).

Cheers

While I was installing SuSe 10.1 my notebook went black cos my notebook processor was overheated. It is a desktop replacement notebook with an AMD Athlon™ 64 for DTR processor. Do you have any idea what should I do? It is possible to pass parameters to set processor frequvency to lower its freq value during installation to reduce its temperature?

My notebook is an acer aspire 1522 Wlmi.

I recommend you start a new thread with "acer aspire 1522 Wlmi overheating" in the subject line (or something like that).

Hi, I installed SuSE 10.1 on an Acer 5502.

14.1 Widescreen (nice screen)
1.73 Pent-M
ATI x700
DVDRW Slot loaded
Intel pro 2200bg wireless
Broadcom ethernet
Card reader (ENE Tech)
80gb hard drive
all for around 1000$ (bought in Taiwan)

Suse runs great in general if you use XFS file system. I tried the default reiserfs at first but was unhappy with the bootup times. Using XFS really sped up the boot time. Not sure why. Suse looks really great on the screen, much much better than windows. Installing the ATI proprietary driver was pretty easy if you follow the directions on the wiki.

Here are some things that dont work... or not sure how to configure.
Card reader... as far as I know Linux doesnt support ENE's card reader yet. (I work just down the street from them in Taiwan. Maybe i should throw a rock through their window)
Some of the function (FN +) keys dont work. The one that really irks me is the FN+F5 video out. I have to restart the x server to get video on a projector. Playing videos dont show up on the external monitor.
Grub splash screen doesnt work, but does when you boot up with it connected to an external monitor... Not sure about that
Bluetooth- it "seems" to work but its not so user friendly on how to use it
Some of the hotkeys dont work, like the mail, net, e-manager, and "P" buttons in particular. The bluetooth and wirless buttons work however.
Suspend to disk is really buggy. Im not sure about suspend to ram.

Suse 10.0 & 10.1 work great on my 3 Pentuim III Compaq Armada m700 notebooks after they were flashed with the latest (2002) BIOS. (under the older BIOS the Trackpoint mouse doesn't work)

The TV out doesn't work as the ATI Mobile Rage chipset is not supported in their current Linux drivers, but I can boot up Windows for the rare occasions I might need TV out-I have only ever used it twice.

Suspend to disk and standby work well in 10.0, although restoring from suspend to disk was sometimes slow in my initial install of 10.1-I reinstalled it today and haven't yet tried hibernating it.

Cheers,
Rod Schaffter

Acer Aspire 1511Lmi seems to work fine, just have to install ndiswrapper for my Wlan, but got that to work on 9.3 so I don't see why it wouldn't work on 10.1. Battery status works out of the box (woohoo!) but haven't checked things like suspend yet.

SuSE Linux 10 worked fabulously out of the box on my Toshiba Equium M50-164 (Centrino Mobile 1.73 GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HDD, Dual Layer DVD+-RW, 14" WXGA, Intel i915 Display, Marvel Youkon 100Mbps NIC, Intel Wi-Fi, etc.). I have not tried the Firewire on SuSE yet, so I don't know whether it works or not.

I tried to get Fedora Core 4 & CentOS 4 to work on it, but was unsuccessful in configuring the display and the network adaptors.
