I installed the Eval edition of SuSE 10.0 on my IBM Thinkpad 600. Specs:

P-II 300Mhz
224MB RAM
40GB Seagate hard drive

The system works fine with the stock kernel from the install. However, when I update the kernel I get the following:

hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hda: DMA timeout error
hda: dma timeout error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed optcode was: unknown
hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hda: DMA timeout error
hda: dma timeout error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed optcode was: unknown
hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hda: DMA timeout error
hda: dma timeout error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed optcode was: unknown
hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hda: DMA timeout error
hda: dma timeout error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed optcode was: unknown

I then get a message saying that DMA was turned off and the system continues to boot. I also lose my USB.

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem.
Before the update it starts, after the update the problem above. In addition I get the message:
about Fan (ACPI) device not founf.
ACPI=off does not bring improvement.
Starting "fail safe" does not work either.

How can I solve this problem without reinstalling thze software again (2 hours plus)?

Thanks for your answer.
