sweet, that worked!!!

OK, two of my issues are solved. I still don't have battery stuff working, I made sure everything recommended was installed.

I talked to a grad student today, he said something about compiling the kernel to get battery working.

Anyone?

Hi, what notebook do you have? Sometimes there is problem with some part of BIOS called DSDT, try to find patched DSDT for your model here.

Then you should be able to attach it to initrd, without need to recompile kernel. Look here:

I had this problem with my Acer Aspire and this solved it for me. Battery worked but I couldn't see the status (you have the same problem don't you?). Now everything is OK.
Another post which was very useful for me: Howto fix your buggy DSDT. Hope this will help .

Cheers,
T.

if you have some new, suse default kernel, it's already patched (look at /etc/sysconfig/kernel, there should be something like ACPI_DSDT="")

so you just need to fix your dsdt. it seems you will have to do it yourself since there is no one who have already done it for your HP (you can try to search google for someone with the same model as you have, they may have some solution).... unfortunately I don't know how to fix dsdt, I have no experience with it, because I was the lucky one who found fixed, ready-to-use dsdt for my notebook on that website

you should definitely go through that post on suseforums (Howto fix your buggy dsdt), it's very comprehensive... with long discussion.. some of those people should be able to help you I hope

I think this site is gonna be the best for me: Easy Guide

but the command seems to be acpi_os_name = "Microsoft Windows XP" instead of acpi_os = "MSWINXP"

even though I have 10.0, will these instructions from 9.2 change? I am guessing not, but not sure. I really like this guide, its written for a noob like me to understand what the h*** to do!!!!

I am gonna try starting on this tomorrow, its a bit hard without wireless functionality though!!! Still trying to get that one resolved, look at my topic in wireless networking subforum if you can help, i posted a lot of code, seem to be finding some errors, so I think I am on the right track there.

Hi, that easy guide looks very nice
I'm a linux noob too, win98 crashed on my old pc year ago and I was able to save my important data with small little thing called "puppy linux live cd". That's when I fell in love with linux. Putting it on my notebook was a bit pain and I'm still learning, but it works OK now, so don't give up!!!
Sorry I don't know much about setting wifi, I made it work somehow, I don't remember how - it was on the very beginning, now I wish I put this thing down.. But solve the acpi thing first, i'm not sure but think it could be somehow connected with wifi, did you mention on that wireless forum that you boot with acpi=off?
Good luck!

thanks for your help!!!

one question: which iasl compiler should i use? I tried to do it with the unix one and make it into linux using the code on intel's site, but for some reason the "make" command won't work.

How should I approach this?

it appears as though a linux version is no longer available, instead the unix version must be used and forced into linux.

I remember having problem with it as well but then I think I found out that iasl was already there, in /usr/sbin/... and it worked! sorry i forgot to mention that...

yes I can see it now... it is part of package called pmtools, check YAST if you have it installed

ok, i have pmtools, but where is the folder is suse 10.0 that i need to get the buggy dsdt out of? the guide i am using was written 9.2, so the folder changed.

its not /proc/acpi/dsdt, and /proc/acpi doesn't exist.

wow, strange, I have it in my suse 10, are you sure? then I don't know
maybe it's because you've never booted with acpi=on, but I'm just guessing..

hmmm.. what i found:

Before you get started fixing your DSDT, you will need the following:
1. ACPI support compiled into your kernel (static or modules), so you have a /proc/acpi directory.
2. The latest ACPI patches from acpi.sourceforge.net (if using vanilla sources).
3. The Intel asl compiler, available here.
and EITHER
4. The static DSDT override patch (tested with kernels 2.4.23 and above), available here
OR
5. The initrd DSDT override patch appropriate for your kernel, avaliable here

so it seems that you might have problem with 1. ... but thats strange since there should be no problem with suse default kernel... maybe you're missing some modules??? but I'm guessing completely now and speak nonsense maybe... try google, sorry i wish i could help you more
