I am traveling and way from my normal LAN connection. I am trying to get a pcmcia modem to work on my laptop (a Fujitsu S-4542). I tried going the linmodem route but that has been a wash. Got my hands on a 3com Noteworthy 56K pcmcia card but still having troubles.
When I insert the card I get two high pitched beeps. My /var/lib/pcmcia/stab file lists one socket being used: 0 serial serial_cs 0 ttyS1 4 65 I have no idea what most of this means but I figured the ttyS1 was the mount for the modem. I can't figure out how to determine if I have the proper driver installed for this modem and how to get YaST to recognize it. I tried adding the modem manually through YaST using the /dev/ttyS1 mount point but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated! I am traveling out of my normal country and setting up friend's computers to show the proper language and allow for encoding is a hassle. Help! Thanks in advance. |

I am no expert myself but here is what you can try:
Find the SuSE hardware tool, it's icon looks something something like a card that you plug into a free slot of your desktop PC. See if in Modem it has any entries If it does then use the detail button to give you some ideas. The other quick way is to use Yast and simply start with ttys0 (Com 1) then ttys1.... everytime you change it go back to kinternet tool and open "view log" keep it open as you try to dial your ISP. It will tell you everytime if it can talk to the modem. try that 1st and we dig deeper if this doesn't work.. |
