i still couldnt connect to the internet with my acer notebook, iam using suse 9.1, ok, first things first, how to determine the modem which on my windows system its recognized as agere system ac97. i've tried using kinternet and selecting /dev/tty01 and its announced that the modem was ready, but when i dialed my ISP, it wont work?

I think you have a soft modem. If it is a conexant modem, you can find correct driver from linuxant web site.

http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/

try this link. It gives you a small program (you can run it on linux or windows, if you have) to identify the modem exactly. Then you can download the crrect driver.
