Try starting the yast2 (GUI) or yast (Text) configuration tool. Under the hardware menu select Mouse Model (use generic mouse ps/2 if your mouse isn't listed). You have may also have to reconfigure X-Windows using the Graphics Card and Monitor. I have a Dell notebook (Synaptics touch pad and auto-generic for my external mouse) and I have added two mice in the list (Graphics Card and Monitor only). Its probably best to start with a generic ps/2 mouse or auto. Depending upon your touchpad or stick you may also want to add this as well. This should get you going for the mean time. The X-Windows configuration file can be modified to enable certain buttons etc, including whether a touch pad responds to taps etc. You may have to google for it or try

Generally speaking I have found that PS/2 generic works for most external mice and also the touchpad, however extended features are missing until they are enabled etc.
