Hi,
Try this and see if your modem works. Start Yast then choose 'Network Devices', then click on 'Modems'. At the top of the window that appears there is a section named 'Modems to configure', hopefully there should be two options there, one says 'Other not detected' and your HP modem. Make sure the HP modem is highlighted and click the 'Configure' button. Work through the rest of the screens entering your service providers details as needed. After you have finished configuring your modem & ISP try connecting to the internet with the program 'KInternet'. Weaner |

I haven't used a dial-up modem for over a year but I had a look in the Suse user guide and it states that the initialization strings are used mainly for ISDN adapters so I doubt this would be the problem.
When you first clicked the configure box did a little window appear telling you that a driver was being loaded for the modem? If not then it is probably a driver problem, I had a look at the HP site here but couldn't find any linux drivers at all for your computer, maybe you'll have better luck searching the site with the modem model code. Also have another look at the ISP info again to make sure it is correct. Weaner |

hey thanks for doing a search for me ,I to alaso did a search and I agree it seems to be a driver problem .there dosent seem to be much support for win modems suse regionzes that a modem is there, displays the name of the modem , but your right, device manger tells me that the driver is not configure.(not configured) is how its stated . I been to linmodems .org and they have drivers for generic chipsets. now all I need is to find out what chipset my modem has built in ....mabey I could use one of there drivers if one of them matches .right now I'am doing a search to try to find out exactly what chipset is being used for the modem on this laptop( compaq presario R3440 ca) or a R 3000 seris laptop same thing I think just different video card and region set up . any how what do you think ? Does seem to be a good approch  Ill let you know if i find something use full thanks again

Good luck with the search for the chipset, soft modems are a pain at the best times. If all else fails you could pick up a cheap second-hand external modem, most of them will work straight away but if you are unsure have a look through the Suse hardware database.
Happy hunting, Weaner |
