HP is offering a laptop with Linux pre-loaded. The december issue of LinuxFormat has a nice 2-page review of this laptop. They also refer to another laptop at the start of the interview.
See here for the HP laptop: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF...f33-395654.html And, depending on where you live, you can get laptops with Linux pre-loaded from http://www.linuxcertified.com/ |

I've noticed that most IBM laptops work well with Suse Linux. I've installed everything from 8.1 to 9.2 and never had a problem on thinkpads.

How expensive are they? If they're not too expensive, I might get one myself. |

I started with a HP ze5385us laptop 2-years ago. Tried mandrake & only way I could get it to setup was with noacpi @ boot never did get wireless setup but I was a real noob. D/Ld Suse 9.0 & bingo everything was recognized and set up except coding in wireless #s. Did it again with 9.1 and now 9.2. with 9.2 everything works out of the box -- still had to code in wireless #s. Works like a champ!
That said, my next laptop is going to be an amd64 bit & Nvidia video card. Before Christmas, Best Buy had an hp amd64 bit on sale at near $1349 after rebates. I didn't have the free cash then -- thank God, cause afterwards, I have looked a little & most of the 64bit laptops in that range use the nforce-150 ver mobo with pc2700 333hz ram. And, I want a whole lot more than that provides. There are some 64-bit laptops out there in the $2100-2200 price range that fill the bill though I can't afford one just now. Especially since there's nothing wrong with my ze5385. I guess what I am saying, is, take a look at an AMD64 notebook for the long term. Just check out what drives it. Look at the maker's support site/faq/forum/etc in any case. you won't be sorry you took the time to look before you buy. Snakedriver |

I'm not recommending this yet, but it's a start in the right direction. take a look at:
http://www.hypersonic-pc.com/AX6/index.asp Aviator ax6 for $1689 = bang for the buck the off the shelf aviatior ax7 approx $2200 = 17 inch display = WOW. = 8.4lbs= WOW. we are talking 1MB L2 cashe, AMD64 3400+, 512mb pc3200 400Hz RAM, 60GB 7200 rpm HHD, however, an ATI video card -- at this time I would prefer an Nvidia card. However, the ATI has 128mb onboard RAM (my HP5385 =no on card RAM = uses system RAM, alas!) which is excellent! It also has a VIA K8T800 + VT8235 mobo which is better than the Nforce3-150, but not as good as the Nforce3-250Gb. Plus, the Nforce4's are forcasted to be on the street this spring. So, if I had to have a laptop right now, I'd lean toward something like this after I spent some time on the support forum, etc. I'm sure there's lot's of systems to compare and, hey, I don't have anything against an IBM Thinkpad. Lastly, for the systems selling for $1100-$1300, you need to look at the specs real hard, otherwise, you are going to wind up with 128mb 333hz RAM, a video card that uses some of that, a HDD running @ 4000rpm, etc. and while it may be an AMD64 it will be sloowww. Hope this helps, Snakedriver |
