Greetings, folks.

I'm having problems shutting down my computer. Sometimes it shuts down just fine (giving me the splash screen and the option to press 'esc' for more info), but sometimes it just leaves me with a black screen with the mouse pointer visible. It would sit there forever if I left it.

However, once it reaches that stage, I can press the power button and it seems to finish the shut down process, although it doesn't show the splash screen. If I do that, I get hard drive activity (as evidenced by the flashing LED on the front of my laptop and hard drive noises) and after a while, the mouse pointer disappears. Then, after a few moments, it appears to halt and power down the computer.

While this works just fine, and doesn't leave any disk errors or anything, it can be somewhat of a pain. If you have any ideas on how to fix this (and have it shut down properly every time, not just at it's whim) I would be appreciative.

Thanks, guys.

I had a similar problem with my Toshiba, except that it wouldn't reboot - shutdown is OK but just will not reboot. I never did get to the bottom of this and if I need to reboot I have to via a shutdown. This does not help you much but you may get some hint's from the this thread that may be related to your problem:

Hope this is of some help.

Wow. That's odd. Mine reboots just fine. (Well... I have problems with USB and network subsystems upon reboot once it finishes rebooting, but it doesn't have any trouble rebooting...)

Thanks for your help.
