I recently purchased Suse 9.2 for my laptop. I have gone through several laptop changes in the past few months thanks to Dell. I started with an Inspiron 4100 with Suse 9.0. I am now running a Inspiron XPS and trying to get 9.2 stable. The problem seems to be something graphical in nature. It will hard lock while changing themes, resizing windows, opening new windows, etc. Even opening a new console window will cause the lockup.

My system
Dell XPS
3.4 GHZ P4
ATI 9800 w/256 M/B
1.2 G/B Ram
60 G/B HD
etc, etc

Winblows seems to work fine. As well as it can. I only installed it to play HL2. I had no problems playing. I thought it could be a memory problem. Let the mem test run overnight, no errors with 38 passes. When it locks up, I am unable to do anything except power cycle. This is not good!! I can’t get to alt consoles. Nothing is written to /var/log/messages. Could this be an issue with the ATI 9800 and Xorg? I expected that I might not get 3d under Linux for some time. ATI needs to release their driver for kernel 2.6. I did think it would be stable with 2d. Can someone help me troubleshoot? I contacted Suse support via email and got a response to test mem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
Chris

Did you update the ATI drivers in YOU? The ATI should be fine in 2D. If it passed the memtest and it works fine in XP playing HL, then the memory should be fine.

I did not try to update through YOU. I followed the instructions at ati, they did not work. Those drivers were for xf86. At that point I gave up on using the ati driver for now. I will try to update the driver with YOU.

Thanks,
Chris

There are no updates for the video card. The system has all updates avail. How do I force update?

You would need to go to YAST, then Add and Remove Software. Find the ATI drivers and install from there. Once that is done, open YOU and find those same drivers. Click the box untl you get a lightining bolt. Then and only then will it update the driver via YOU.

There are no ATI X.org compatible drivers at the moment. They are still in closed beta testing and have not been released.

Wilson, I will give this a try. I have to run yast from init 3 since init 5 is not stable.

kastorff,
Judging by this link, I "should" have a functional system without 3d. This is a link to H/W Database for Vendor ID #1002 and Device ID #4a4e. This is the correct device id for my video card.

I know Suse moved to Xorg for 9.2 but this clearly says I should have full functionality without 3d. People rely on this info before making both H/W and S/W purchases.

That's right, but 2d is all he is asking for. Just trying to get him hooked up with usable video.

Tried this already. I tried using both the 9700 and 9000 driver both worked in 2d but would still lock up. the sure fire way to get a lockup is to bounce the themes back and forth. It will lock in less than a min.

The PCIID D/B for 4a4e calls for the M18 Driver...

4a4e M18 JN [Radeon Mobility 9800]

The Suse H/W DB says to use 420 JN Driver.

I could not find a M18 driver.

I CAN switch to different ATI drivers however I get the same problem.

???What is the most generic driver, which I might use to test???

I would like to see if I still end up with lock ups with a driver know to work with anything....
