Hi Folks!!!

Xmas is coming and many people are planning to buy elettronics or something similar...

But, there's a question that drives crazy persons like me ( and many Suser too)...
I'd like to buy a notebook but that works fine with my lovely Suse...

Basic function:
cd/dvd
Wlan (possibly working without too many worksarounds)
Geforce (or othen GPU that can enable 3D and works for KDE)

AnyThings more will be welcome, but I think nobody wants a monster as notebook...

i think that's enoug to start to search

i don't wont to start a flame, please, i'd like to know our experience on the field (i dont't have a notebook/laptop)

just to prefer HW Producer that's like us (ad Suser, i mean...)
thank u in advance....

Every company of notebook computers have it's shares of problems with Linux, I can say that IBM's has a bit of a problem with configuring it's eraserhead mouse. Dells, I seen have problems with booting. Compaq/HP, have mainly networking problems and hardware recongition.

Choose wisely.

Thumbs up

My Dell Inspiron 8000 is on its last legs I believe...it apparently knows better than I do when it should be shut off, and hasn't been shy about letting me know it.

I've looked at the Dell Inspiron 9200 and XPS line since I've had good success w/ the 8000, but also keeping my options open. Really need a multi-media PC...standard notebook specs won't cut it for me.

Wondering if anyone has had any linux experience (SuSE or otherwise) with any of the following:

#1. LinuxCertified LC2430D or LC2530
#2. Sony Vaio A-Series (VGN-A2xx)
#3. Toshiba Qosmio

Obviously the LinuxCertified would be more attractive for the simple fact they don't include the windoze tax or other software I'd never use on it, but never dealt w/ LinuxCertified before, nor seen many reviews of their reputation, service, quality, and product support.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Just my 2 cents, I am using an hp pavilion ze5375us. Suse is the only distro that I have been able to install. I have Windows XP Home on the first partition and Suse 9.2 Pro on the second. I had to do an upgrade install over 9.1 Personal as a new install of 9.2 would not access my USB Adapter for my linksys to my DSL. Other than that I am very happy with Ssuse.
Cheers. Ray.

I've never had a single problem with the trackpoint with any distro.

I used 9.0 Pro on an old Dell laptop (PII 400 Mhz), and it ran with no problems. Currently (although not SuSE) I'm running FC2 on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 (PIII 750), and it runs with no problems. I also ran Mandrake 10 official on it for a while with no problems. I wouldn't recommend Toshiba, however as they seem to be the ones with the most issues in my office. The Dells, and Compaqs seem to have fewer issues in my office (speaking strictly about hardware - LCD, HD's, etc).

I personally like Dell, but HP/Compaq is making Linux friendly PC's and laptops now too.

Yestaday I bought a HP Pavilion zv5310EA ...basically known as the zv5000 series....this morninig I had a few problems resizing the hard drive in Yast, even after scandisking and defrag which is imperative with ntfs partitions, just kept telling me no, probably a Microsoft thing stopping you ( trying to ) using Linux. Wiped the disk clean, reinstalled windows on a fat32 based drive and bingo, Linux picked it up straight away. Installed NLD9 with no problems, as to date everything is working as good as it would in windows. 99 % perfect. Only prob, this laptop best rez is an unusual 1280 * 800 so its set to 1024 * 768 at the moment it has a Nvidia G-Force video card...I have not really looked for a Linux driver yet, but I am sure there is something out there.

Connected to the net about 2 minutes after installation.

Not tried a few things like the dvd player but it knows the drive is there and reads it. Its seems as solid as a rock. Not bad for a laptop that does not say its Linux compatable;

Price 999 euros with the promise that if you find cheaper they will refund the difference; Just found one for 829 euros actually on the hp site, so I will kick up a fuss and hopefully get some bucks back tomorrow.

Mad.

I've got an HP Pavilion ze4505ea, which I bought a year ago. Never had any problems at all with it. Initially I used it solely for SuSE 9.0 and then about four months ago I decided to reinstall the original Windows XP and dual boot with SuSE. I use a Netgear combined modem/router to connect to the Internet.

I currently run a Toshiba satellite 1800-712 and a HP pavilion ze4900 both dual booting with XP home and SuSE 9.1 pro.

The Toshiba running fat32 in windows partitioned and installed without any problems. The wireless card did not work 'out of the box' but this was down to the belkin card and not the laptop.

The HP running ntfs in windows would not automatically partition under Yast. I ended up creating a free partition with partition magic - and even that was not without a few attempts, running defrag and fdisk before even that would work. But, after this everything installed without a hitch. In fact I haven't even run XP except when I first bought it and then subsequently installed SuSE. In the near future I intend to remove XP completely and free the remaining disk space for trying other distro's. Again, I use a belkin pcmcia card for wireless access to the internet via a router using ndiswrapper to drive the card.
