Hi.
My GF spilt Coke all over my laptops keyboard. Now half of the keys don't work, a lot of them need to be severely hit to work, and some are plain old stuck to the sugar that the Coke has left 'neath the keyboard. I have a Sony VAIO PCG-GRT 100. Is there anything I can do to clean this mess and save my keyboard? This is my only computer at home since I gave my desktop to my GF and I sold my other Sony Laptop. Suggestions please? |

If you can find the screws of the keyboard, then you can remove it and wash it with water, then let it dry and connect it.
If you can't do that then you can either wait and see if it gets better (I don't think because of the sugar) or try to wash it like that, which is dangerous for the laptop. Last but costly, order a new keyboard and replace it. |

short of buying a new keyboard, washing it in plain water is your only hope. I can't help but wonder how much got past the keyboard and onto the motherboard. The sugar has to be cleaned up. I used to use triclorethane for this, but you can't buy it anymore.
Take her out back and shoot her in the head. B) |

I've never disassembled a laptop before so I can't help you with that part of the job. I did, however, once spill diet pepsi in my microsoft natural keyboard. Like everyone said, washing it immediately in water is a good idea. I'll add, too, that it takes these things a lot longer to dry out than you'd think. It took keyboard WEEKS to completely dry out. My best advice is to shake it out real good after you thoroughly soak it. Then, shake it every day until no more mosture is apparent. Then, let let it air dry for at least two weeks after that - longer if you can stand it. What you DON'T want to do is plug it back in while it's still damp... WTTW.
