I've been told that the HP1020 printer can be a real "bear" sometimes, especially to get it working properly as a network printer.

The openprinting site has this to say:
http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.c...P-LaserJet_1020

Note the recommended driver is foo2zjs.

Often for HP printers, it helps if one install "hplip". One can obtain somewhat dated version of this app, packaged as an rpm by the Packman packagers:
http://packman.links2linux.de/package/hplip/29200

Do you also have an HP1018 you are trying to setup ? If so, look here for the HP1018:

As a further note to this, ... if you check the opensuse hardware compatibility site, this printer should work with 10.0:
http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Printers#...t_1020_in_10.x
