Hi,

New(ish) to Linux, and very new to openSuSE. I'm an ex-Ubuntu user with a little knowledge.

I have just installed 10.3 Desktop and everything has worked like a dream, except printing. Firstly my setup.

AMD Athlon 64x2 5000+
Biostar K8M800 mainboard
Samsung 320Gb SATA2
2Gb RAM
Nvidia FX5200 graphics

Samsung ML-2510 printer via USB 2.0

So, as mentioned above, everything worked like a dream but I can't get the printer to print a page. When I turn on the ML-2510 SuSE automatically recognises it and I can send a job to the printer without error. When I check the printer status via the Control Centre it says Ready, 1 job. When I double click the printer to check the queue status I see the following under the State column - Stopped: Job-stopped.

The job owner is my user name, but whenever I access the printer setup I need to use the root login and passwd. Could this be the problem?

Nothing I do gets the job out of the queue and to the printer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Apologies if this is a duplicate post. I have searched the forum but found nothing to guide me.

Cheers
Paul

Is is set up as a CUPS printer? If so, try checking from the CUPS http interface with 'http://localhost:631/'

Does the printer print ok from root account?

Thanks for the input. I don not state I am able to solve your problem, but, like ferrari, I want to gather as much info as possible until somebody cries: that is it!.

When in YaST (where you got that other info) there is a bit more, like PPD file, when you select the entry and you click "Edit". Cllick "Abort" after inspection to be sure you do not change anything.

Hi Henk,

Yes there is a PPD file showing. The entry reads: Samsung ML-2510 Series (Samsung/ML-2510spl2.ppd)

Hi ferrari,

Well, when I set it up I installed it as a local printer, but on browsing to the link you gave me it does indeed show up as a CUPS printer  I don't know how I managed that...

When I go to the printer tab I see this error:

Filter "rastertosamsungspl" for printer "ML-2510-Series" not available: No such file or directory"

So I browsed to /usr/lib/cups/filter and the file didn't exist. I copied the file from the driver CD and installed that in the above directory. When I then start the printer I get no error message, but when I send a test print I see this error: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl failed". That file does exist.

No show with root account either.

Dodgy driver maybe?

Cheers

Just a few stabs at it. Remove printer in YaST. Unplug the usb cable and shut down computer completely (power off). leave printer unplugged and start computer. After coming back up shutdown again and plug Printer cable back in. You might try a different usb port at this time if one is available. Restart and go to YaST>Hardware>printers and see if you can configure the printer. Do the configuration this way rather than if you get a device detected message.

Hi Matt,

No luck. But my output on the CUPS browser page has changed since I installed again after the shutdown sequence. This is it:

ml2510series (Default Printer) "Filter "rastertosamsungspl" for printer "ml2510series" not available: Permission denied"

Description: Samsung ML-2510 Series
Location: USB printer on //Samsung/ML-2510%20Series
Make and Model: Samsung ML-2510 Series
Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: ipp://Samsung/ML-2510%20Series

OK, a little progress.

I changed the owner and group to root root and chmoded to 777.

Now I get this at the CUPS browser screen when I send a test job to the queue:

ml2510series (Default Printer) "Connecting to Samsung on port 631..."

Followed by this:

ml2510series (Default Printer) "Unable to lookup host 'Samsung' - Unknown host"

The system then goes in to retry mode, alternating the above messages. So it seems were looking for the queue now, but how do I get it to recognise Samsung as the host.

Nearly there I think.

Cheers
Paul
