Thumbs up

I have a US Robotics 5686E External Serial Modem (Which says that it will work with Linux), and my computer won't recognize that it's even there. Can anyone help?

Serial modems should work fine. Have you tried to install Kinternet and smppd from YaST? It has been a long while since I looked into modems but there is a old Howto from SuSE 10.0 I wrote located here.
You might try searching in YaST> Software Management for modem and see what is available.

Yeah, both Kinternet and smpppd are installed. I called USR support and they said something about needing to talk to the COM port?

The device should be able to communicate via /dev/ttyS0 ( or similar device node such as /dev/ttyS1 for example). If it is via a USB connection, then it could be attached to a device node like /dev/ttyUSB0.

Try this modem test how to. It explains how to send a simple query to a serial modem, and watch for a reply, via two xterm windows. You could use a terminal program but this is simpler.

If you get a useful response, then you can proceed to configuring with yast.

good one ferrari!
I concur, it should work being an external, as ferrari stated, try the test then go to yast to set up the hardware, once it is configured, kinternet will be able to handle the dial up.

how is the modem connected to your kit usb or serial?

If the modem is connected via the serial port, go into the BIOS and make sure the serial port is turned on and configured.

The modem is connected via serial and the serial port is on, but I'll try the modem test that ferrari suggested. Maybe I'm just dense, but YaST doesn't even recognize that the modem is there, so how would I configure it with YaST?

Did you try the "add" under YaST> Network Devices> Modem. and see if /dev/ttySo or whatever is available to add?

Yeah, there isn't anything to add.
